So Japan still has the death penalty

Japanese cult leader executed for Tokyo sarin attack

Not just the cult leader, but 12 others sentenced to death as well. Seven were hanged this week, six more to go.

According to the article, executions are carried out in secret and no warning of the execution date is given to the prisoner or anyone else. I guess they just show up at your cell and say "It's your turn."

That's one way to avoid protests.

since my MIL is Japanese we watch NHK constantly....they weren't executed in a week, they were executed in one night! As it was being announced I texted my husband "Japan has the death penalty?". He texted back, "I wouldn't think so". I finally had to call him and expain what was going on over there.
I guess some criminals where it's very straight-forward, the death-penalty is carried out rather quickly. It was pretty interesting to read about.

I got the impression from the first article that I read that this was the case (all in one event), but it didn't seem to come right out and say that. Interesting.

ETA: Texas has seven executions scheduled from now through December. Texas has executed eight so far in 2018, the latest three days ago.

They waited until all trials were complete, then promptly executed.

I consider that fair. If the trial/appeal of guy #10 reveals information about the guys 1 through 9, it makes sense that you would want them to have the opportunity to appeal.

Once everything is complete, and no more appeals, do it within a few weeks. Seems logical...?

It is interesting to me that one of the "carry" prohibitions in the Texas CHL law forbids
carry with x thousands of feet from an execution site (Huntsville).

Fun fact 1: For many years, Texas criminals sentenced to death had to be executed
in the county in which they committed their murders. IIRC, some of these became public
spectacles, so Texas then decreed that all executions would take place in Huntsville, regardless
of the county in which the BG murdered someone.

Fun fact 2: By the way, the federal government still has the death penalty. Site for this: Indiana.

SIA
N. Texas LTC's hold 3 breakfasts each month. All are 800 AM. OC is fine.
2nd Saturdays: Rudy's BBQ, N. Dallas Pkwy, N.bound, N. of Main St., Frisco.
3rd Saturdays: Golden Corral, 465 E. I-20, Collins St exit, Arlington.
4th Saturdays: Sunny St. Cafe, off I-20, Exit 415, Mikus Rd, Willow Park.
