Your most “American” gun on this 4th of July

Happy 4th of July! Now as many of you will be grilling and enjoying this very American holiday; what do you consider your most “American” gun? What pistol do you feel best expresses the free American spirit which we are blessed with?

Is it that it is made in America? A gun that won the west? A good ol war horse? What is your 4th of July “BBQ gun” and what is it about it that makes it “American” to you?

The most American pistol I own is my 1911

My BBQ pistol today is my Smith and Wesson model 642-1. To me the J frame is iconic because of its history. It has been carried by more people and used more times to defend life than any other carry gun. And Smith and Wesson is truly American. I am proud to be a wheel gunner in today’s time. I’ve been told I’m stupid to carry a wheel gun and that it’s archaeological not with the times but it is more than capable and I can shoot it well.

I love my MK 25. Although I was a destroyerman in the Navy; I was not quite SEAL material. I don’t know if it gets more American for me than the US Navy SEALs. This pistol imo just Oooozes freedom.

Oh; and it is definitely my best shooter as well. It is my only pistol which I can tell exactly where my bullet will go. I can even tell when I “pull” a shot where it should be and there it always is.

Love it. I gave a 638 to my father after he took my carry class. I miss it all the time. My next purchase will be a revolver.

Today I will take dad's 1911 A. Swenson 45 today for my lunch meeting and outings with his Askins holster.
4th = an 1911 day to me, dad's 1911 has been used for photo shoots several times.

For me- it's my STI 1911 Not a BBQ gun in the traditional sense but since I carry it often and I BBQ often- it's a workhorse BBQ gun! And since it's not plastic, it won't melt next to the fire!

I have 2 - a Remington/UMC 1911 made in 1917. And my M1 Garand made by International Harvester. What's more American than a M1 built by a tractor company?

My most American pistol has to be the 1911. Rifle - I'm torn between my Model 62 Winchester which is based on the first really successful pump/slide action (Model 1890 Winchester) and a Marlin 336 that is now the longest running lever action rifle in production. The slide action was designed to compete with the Winchester levers while the patents were in effect and ironically Winchester's was the most successful effort early on, beating out the Colt Lightning. The Winchester pump models had no trigger disconnect and are capable of firing repeatedly by pumping them. Sort of the first assault rifles. If I had an 1873 Colt SAA and an 1866 Win that would be the ticket! Both are iconic and probably are predominantly identified with American firearms.
