Helped a neighbor out today

After Charles told me we may not be able to set up a scholarship fund, I set my neighbor up with CHL class. She is a single mother of 2 and barely getting by. I had taken her to the range several times. She had said she would like to get her CHL but couldn't afford it. Talked to my wife about it and she said after Christmas. Well I went and signed her up today, paid for the class and she will be going in January. I told her I will also pay for her license after the class (class is all inclusive). Told her to just pay it forward (help someone else) when she can.
Her and my wife just left to go to the range to practice. Wouldn't let me go.Says it's a womens night at the range. Funny thing though, I'm now missing 2 boxes of ammo. Oh well

Good job Brown. I have made the same offer to my son-in-law who is in grad. school & he won't go. They have been buglarized twice in the past 3 yr. Garage only, Thank you Lord. I can't figure when he will wake up. Have a great New Year.

Does your Son-in-law own a firearm, or is he at least familiar with them?

The reason I ask, is that my wife is reluctant to get her CHL (doesn't want to carry), but is ready and able to defend herself at home.

I have found that when talking with people who have little (or no) experience with firearms, that most... would not consider arming themselves for several reasons.

1. They are not familiar with firearms....and usually view them as "dangerous" tools.

2. Not being familiar with firearms, they are not confident that they could properly use one to defend themselves or others. (A legitimate concern IMO).

3. Their "peer group" may not approve, and this can influence a person more than we might think.

None of the above may apply to your Son-in-law. But if it does, try to persuade him to join you in a casual afternoon of shooting. Nothing tactical, no mention of self defense, just a good time plinking.

I have introduced many a person to "Guns" this way, and after a few sessions talking about safety, demonstrating their proper use and handling, and ultimately letting them shoot, they ALL went away with a different view of guns and their use.

I guess what I am trying to say (in a long winded way) is that: Some people are afraid of guns, or lack the confidence that they could learn to use one for recreation, or defense.

Of course, some people...(my wife included), simply choose not to carry...and I respect that, even I don't understand it.

Its great to see that you guys are trying to do all that you can. My hats off to you!

HighV, you really took a hit. I only lost one. When my wife decided to get her CHL & start carrying 22-6 (only w/o it at work) she got a Sig 232 like her Mother-in-law had. (Proud of Mom's shooting at 75) One day the bride picked up my Baretta Tomcat & said, Hey this fits better in my purse. I have not shot it since, cleaned it a bunch but no noise. I am just thankful that the ladies are armed. Today is a prime reason. She has a dozen different things to do in town & I don't need to lose a day of preparation for Sunday & have a funeral too. I don't worry about her now as much as used to. The Mid-size towns today are getting as rough as the metrop. where some of you guys live.

UPDATE--Susan (my neighbor) just left. Took her class today. Aced the written and shot the lights out on the range. Brought her target for us to see. Pretty good grouping.
Will pick up MO tommorrow for the state.

Now she wants my new toy (SW1911SC). Thats where I draw the line.

Anyway, another CHL soon to be on the streets.

I have convinced people like you describe above to go ahead and take the CHL class. I tell them the benefits of learning Texas' Use of Force Laws, the usefullness of the Non-Violent Dispute Resolution training, the focus on safe handling and storage, etc. All of these things are good to know even for people who would never carry, but still have guns in the home.

This gets them into the class, gets them around people of the carry mindset, and often results in them deciding to go ahead and get the CHL. All very positive steps. ;)
