Ikea in Houston

So my girlfriend made me go with her to Ikea tonight, on really my only night off this week. First time ever being there, and as we were looking for a parking spot we for a brief moment thought we'd found a front spot until we saw the sign that said "Reserved for Hybrid Vehicles."

I scoffed at it and made a comment "dang hippy store!" to her, as I like to tease her as she's far more liberal than I am (not to say she's a liberal, just WAY more than I am :) ).

Anyway, I made a comment after we parked WAY farther out in the parking lot "oh well, at least I've got my gun. They don't know it, but I'm spiting their hippy ways.."

As I approached the door I looked around for 30.06 signs especially hard, and was pleasantly surprised when I saw the ghostbusters style no-guns-allowed sign, right next to the no smoking sign and no pets sign. I chuckled to myself and spent 2 hours in the store with my G23 :)

That's excellent! The Ikea in Frisco is just a few minutes away from me, but I've never been. Excellent report. :-)

I hate IKEA with a passion. I went there with my wife last week so she could get some school stuff, and I almost lost it.

First, the hybrid vehicle parking only spots, full up with Lincoln Navigators (I laughed at that)

NOW they want to charge you for plastic bags! (So you won't use them)

I was passive aggressive and just left my cart sitting in the lot.

I've parked in the "hybrid vehicles only" section out of pure spite.

While i'm pretty much a lefty, and a greenie, I also have a brain. You won't get me on the whole hybrid car thing, or the Ethanol thing. I'll do things that really matter, like composting, and eventually getting a car that's "green" not only on the environment, but budgetwise too. Hybrids ain't it.

Now, if the Chevy Volt all-electric car looks as good as it does, you'll get me in one of THOSE pretty easily, assuming it's priced decently.

We went there last week and I parked in th Hybrid spot as well. Refuse to pay for plastic bags then realized the carts cant be removed from the entrance. How was I to get all my stuiff to the car? Easy, I lifted the basket over the stupid wall and rolled on out. 2 women who were standing there puzzled as well actually clapped. i wont be going back there anymore until this silly stuff is fixed.

I understand this whole "Green" movement is just another way to get people to patronize the business. I just will not bow to the will of little tyrants that want to force their will on everyone else and get paid to do it. It is bad enough that governments do it.

I am all for adjusting how we do things to preserve the environment when legitimate science finds harm being done. That said, when the Greenies clean up China and the other developing nations then I will consider doing more. Not one second before though.

I don't know for sure but, it seems if they had better lawyers they would have correct signs up. Poop draws flies. I think that is 10 year old friendly enough but nothing near what I want to write.

At frys, they have "Electric Vehicle Only" parking spots, and I've parked in there to do a quick return. (I know, I'm nasty)

Someone challenged me once. "Your car isn't electric!"
"Sure it is. It's got a generator and a battery. How else do you think I ignite the fuel in the engine? ELECTRICITY!" and went off into the store.

I know I should just leave it alone, but I'm not as good of a person as I probably should be.

I have a 3' end off of an old extention cord. Think I will stick it through my grill and leave the plug hanging out, then go park there. Ought to get some good looks anyway!

U have to understand, Ikea is a Swedish company. My mother is from Denmark, and I have been to Scandinavia a few times. The stores there do not give you bags. People bring their own cloth bags, or you pay for plastic/paper bags (whichever they have). That was back in the 1980s when I was last there, and my mother told me it was always that way. So, that issue really doesn't originate from an environmental movement. It is a cultural thing.

As for the store - 1/2 my house is from Ikea. My entire laminate floor, my bedroom set, my child's nursery, my tv stand and several other things.

You can't take the shopping cart out to the lot, and they charge for bags?

Are they trying to alienate customers?

They'd quit this nonsense if, when told they had to PAY for the bag, people would simply tell the cashier "In that case, I don't want any of this stuff any more."

And leave the basket - the FULL basket - for the cashier to deal with.

The "traditional" Scandinavian furniture sold in this country is made of teak or rosewood, uses real leather or wool fabric, and exhibits a generally high level of workmanship. It's well made, stylish (well, some is a bit "far out") and generally high quality, with brands like Ekornes and Torring.

But like people everywhere, not all Scandinavians buy - or can afford - top-notch furnishings. Cheap stuff will find a market everywhere.

Enter Ikea, the K-Mart of Scandinavian furniture, which is where those people have been shopping . . . coming soon to an area near you.
