Long story about a robbery at a Wendy's. At least the K9 also got some good licks in on the suspect. Most on Reddit don't seem to believe the dropped gun went off by itself.

I bet there will be outrage, denial and gnashing of teeth when they name somebody's favorite gun as having a safety flaw.

If it was a pistol then I don't see how it would have if the trigger wasn't pulled. Now if it was a rifle there's a different story. Rifles can go off when dropped

Yeah, I think more than likely the officers "bumping into each other" caused one to squeeze the trigger and the gun was then dropped, after it fired due to recoil in a weak or unstable grip. JMHO

Depends on the gun, most guns have design features to prevent this from happening. Firing pin blocks, and light weight firing pins are features designed to prevent this from happening. Taurus has a big recall because they were susceptible, and so did Ruger with wit the LCP.

"No one was wounded, but one of the officers was injured by shrapnel  after the discharge."

Huh?

I bet ol' Art will sort it all out.

Yeah I'm also unclear on the difference between wounded and injured. Typical poor reporting. I'm betting on one officer not having a good grip, especially if he was also trying to hold onto a dog leash, and accidentally squeezing the trigger in a collision. It's a natural reaction, if you feel your gun being knocked free, that you will try to hold on to it, possibly squeezing the trigger in the process. Everything is just conjecture though, since this was just a synopsis report, and no real details will emerge until an investigation is complete.

Is this real or a Three Stooges episode?

Reminds me of the scene in Blazing Saddles, I won't post a link due to the racial slurs, but it was funny.

Easy...

Officer had finger on trigger when he "bumped" into the other, he squeezed his hand in reflex and fired the gun. Startled, he dropped it. The Dog, being the more properly trained leo in this incident, bit the offending officer to teach him a lesson and remind him that others were put into danger by his negligent action.

Yeah, the comments about the gun being fired before being dropped is where I suspect I'd land as well. What modern pistol, assuming it didn't have any mods that the department gun smith didn't approve, is likely to go off being dropped? We all know they are mechanical devices and mechanical devices can fail but this is pretty dang rare.

The other option is that the officer dropped it and then reached for it out of instinct. Hand hits the trigger, gun goes off, but without a good purchase on the firearm it still falls to the ground.

I like the idea of the disciplinary dog though. :-)
