Hi folks.

I am a new Federal Firearms Licensee here in Texas and I need some advice.

Many of the wholesalers won't sell to me because I haven't opened a retail store yet.

It appears I also need a Sales Tax Permit or something from the State.

I'm just wondering what else I need to obtain before I get started.

Well, it not appears, but it is true. State Comptrollers office in Austin can and will get you all that you need to do business legally.

Yea, you def. need the state permit. Also, you dont have to buy direct, go thru a wholesale warehouse that carrys many brands. This way you avoid the "Buy in" that can sometimes be rather large. I would suggest RSR in Dallas and AMCHAR Wholesale in NY. If you need help with anything just give me a ring!

What you need is a lawyer to advise you on the legal requirements of starting a small business. Yes you need a sales permit, and a whole lot more.

Since I already own a small (service-oriented) corporation, I am familiar with many issues related to business ownership.

Unfortunately, I am not familiar with retail-oriented business ownership.

Can't you just use your sales tax ID that you already have? If it's a corporation you should be able to run your gun business under that umbrella. I'm also a business owner and my tax ID is under my name. I would call the state first, but I think you can use the same one for all of your businesses under one corporation. I'm not sure though, thus the phone call to them.

If you don't have a tax ID yet, it's easy to get. Just go to the state comptroller. You can do all of this online.

Can't you just use your sales tax ID that you already have?

Sales tax ID numbers require a list of the types of products you would be re-selling.

Well if you already know most of the ins & outs, for retail sales you will need a Texas Sales and Use Permit to purchase products without paying sales tax, and to collect it and pay it to the state.
