Recommendations for combat pistol as well as a carry gun

State Troopers put a lot of these through their testing when they started shopping for a new gun for their Troopers. The Sig P320 came out on top. From my experience you have to put money (3.5 pound disconnect and night sights at least) into a glock to get it as good as a P320.

Go with the Sig P229 DAK. I have the P229 in 357 SIG/ 40 barrels. Never had any problems I have fed it every kind of ammo out there. Plus I really like the DAK trigger.

That's a better deal than I typically get on .45 ammo. I generally pay more than $25 a box.

$20/box of how many rounds and what type? Sure, 9mm is less expensive than .45ACP, but not that much.

No I already been there - thanks and too old and retired to go back - but if you draw your weapon for any reason and someone is getting shot or you are getting shot at you are in combat. - matters not if you are in ABU's or a blue uniform or civillian clothes. But, in this case I was speaking about a gun that you carry on your LBE in case it all falls apart.

I to would suggest a Glock 17/19. But if you already own an M&P 45, why not go with an M&P 9? Your already familiar with it so why not stick with something you know?

I love my M&P 9. 17+1 I have lost count of the rounds through mine, without a hiccup, easy to find mags, replacement parts, trigger upgrades if desired.
I carry mine everyday in a DeSantis Scabbard holster, with thumb break. it covers easily with just a shirt when I CC.

This was Federal Brass in value pack - $37 per 100 rds - which I guess means it is $18.50 per 50 rds. I shoot about 200 rds a month. With Tula I think it is about $16 per 50 rds. 9mm cost $11 per 50.

I'm solidly in the middle class and a difference of $24 per month doesn't seem like that big of a difference to me. That's just a couple of decent lunches at a moderately priced place. Fix yourself a sandwich or two at home for lunch a few times a month and make up the difference.

Plus, you already have the .45, but don't let me discourage anyone from getting another firearm.

From your list you gave like I said that the beginning the G19 or sigp320. But I carry my sig p226 full size over my 19 any day and would take it over the p320. It's a little more pricey but it's well worth it. Mine is DA SA and has the short reset trigger. The most accurate pistol I have shot. And if it's good enough for the Navy seals and Texas Rangers it's good enough for me. Yes yes I know the Seals have adopted the G19 as well but they can carry what they want. And I'd want the P226. That's why I got it. It's most def a combat gun and very proven.

Like you, I prefer .45 ACP for EDC. But for a lot of reasons--NATO spec and probable availability, retail and milsurp--I also got me some 9mm firearms.

Most of the range plinking I do in .45 is with Freedom Munitions remanufactured rounds (https://www.freedommunitions.com/ammuni ... reman.html) currently at $12.245 per 50, or $0.2449 per round. Have to factor in sales tax, of course, but I have Freedom's Houston retail store only a few miles from me, so I don't pay shipping.

It is reloaded, mixed-case ammunition, so some ranges won't let you shoot it even though it's commercial, not hand-loads. However, I've been through a few thousand rounds and find it every bit as reliable and accurate as basic-price Federal or Winchester. I also shoot Freedom's 9mm and 5.56 reman ball/boattail. There's typically a lag for 5.56 shipping, but the prep and quality control of their reman ammo has always seemed fine to me.

I'm old-school persnickity in that I won't put steel-case through anything but an AK. I should be more trusting of some of my firearms. I just don't want the chambers and extractors having to deal with very hard metal and what could be minimal, uneven case expansion and malleability. Iffy about aluminum cases because of tinsel that could shear off. And I also take my SUV in for every scheduled maintenance.

I've purchased a lot of stuff milsurp or in bulk, and generally check http://gun-deals.com/ammo for a level-set on pricing before I do. Again, bulk milsurp can be handy for NATO calibers, not so much for U.S.-centric chamberings.

You can reload .45 cheaper than you can buy crappy 9mm ammo. The reloading press and equip will set you back less than the cost of the new gun you are contemplating. Just food for thought.

I have a Sig 229, G19 and M&P 9 Pro. All listed here. They are not really "compact" and print a lot. My go to now is Glock 43. Small enough to not print, and enough rounds to give me time to get to something else.

Either way, you can't go wrong with any of your choices. All great guns and will go bang when needed.
