Legality Concealed Knives

Personally, I carry a knife for utility purposes. Opening boxes, plastic packaging, cutting loose threads, and so forth. I don't carry one as a weapon. It's about the *last* thing that I'd want to use as a weapon, in fact.

Same here...I'm just finding it hard to think of a way to sharpen mine...It has a striaght edge, but it also has a portion that is wickedly serrated...And still sharp as the dickens...

There is no uniform method by which the blade is measured.

One person may interpret "blade" to mean the sharpened part of the blade only, another may think that the blade is everything from the tip to the hilt/locking mechanism.

For fixed blade knives....it could even include the "tang" which may extend all the way through the handle. There needs to be a national standard on this IMO.

FWIW, the Federal law (which doesn't really apply here) measures from the tip to the hilt or handle--whatever would stop a penetrating stab.

Everyone talks about the law from San Antonio about lock blade knives. As someone who has lived in San Antonio since birth, I have carried a lock blade since I turned 18. I have stood next to police officers with the clip on my pocket, and not a word was said. In fact, in the last year I have started carrying 2 or more lock blades on me at all times. Of all of the San Antonio police officers that I know, they only worry about this law if you are doing something else.
When I was 21, I was downtown for Feista, I was walking accross the street and passed an SAPD officer. He reached over pushed the clip of my knife up and the pushed the whole thing back into my pocket so that nothing could be seen. He did not even say aword about it, I just kept on walking.
In fact as I write this, there are more then 4 on me.

I'm trying to find information concerning the legality of carrying knives in Texas. I looked through the penal code, but the only mention I could find was carrying "illegal knives."

(6) "Illegal knife[0]" means a:
(A) knife[0] with a blade over five and one-half
inches;
(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab
another by being thrown;
(C) dagger, including but not limited to a dirk,
stilletto, and poniard;
(D) bowie knife[0];
(E) sword; or
(F) spear.

Any mention of concealment appears to only address handguns.

So from what I read, it seems legal for me to purchase a fixed-blade knife with a blade up to 5.5" and carry it concealed.

That has been argued here several times. It was not the legislative intent that you can carry other weapons, and it is called a concealed HANDGUN license, not a concealed WEAPONS License.

DPS tells us at instructor school that it is a voilation, and LE officers that I know will arrest.

If you wanna be a test case I would love to read about it.

It means that you can be arrested if you have an NSA CHL (non-semi-automatic only) and you get caught carrying a semi-automatic pistol.

It wasn't their intent - but it still says that the section doesn't apply. Black and White "DOES NOT APPLY". They need to add some words in there to reflect that it doesn't apply to handguns only. Look up the definition of "loophole".

I've yet to hear a decent explanation of why there is a separate Revolver class, which excludes semi-auto. Sure Semi's can have more ammo and the trigger is easier to pull, but either your reckless are your not.
