Hello everyone it has been over a year since I have been on the forum so howdy to all.
Let me start by saying that I let my CHL expire a few years back but last summer I took the course again and still have one year left to apply so no worries there. Anyway I just started a new job that I really like so I now have the funds but since it is Sunday the DPS office is closed I am up early on this great morning so thought I would ask the "Brain Trust" here .
I have two questions... 1. Since I once held a CHL and I am a former Deputy Sheriff and still maintain a "valid/in good standing" Texas Peace Officers License my finger prints are already on file. Do I still have to get them taken? I understand that a injury of some kind can alter ones finger print thus I do not have a issue getting finger printed again, just asking.
2. I am not with a police department at this time so can I consider/use "retired Police Officer" and save some money?
1st off thank you for your service, second I'm not sure if you have to or not. If I were you I'd go ahead and do it. Also I don't think I'd put retired police officer unless you plan on staying "retired" I know prob nothing bad would come of it but I wouldn't unless I'm retired.

Thank you for your kind words and support. I was not planning or wanting to use the "retired" aspect as I am still applying with various departments, one could say "The day I retire is the day they plant me" . As mentioned I have no issue regarding the fee's and will gladly pay them and following the DPS process ie the KISS method is best.

I'm in the same boat! All I lack is polygraph and psychological eval and it's off to the academy I go for my local PD

What PD are you looking at? I am starting the application process with Liberty County Sheriffs Office. I introduced myself to a Deputy this past week and they have opening's in every aspect. I was a court bailiff and security officer so that is the position I am pursuing. I had to take a psychological evaluation just to enter the academy but do not stress out about it ok. I was not required to take a poly but I was not "department" bound like you.

GC §411.1991. PEACE OFFICERS.
(a) A person who is licensed as a peace officer under Chapter 1701, Occupations Code, and employed as a peace officer by a law enforcement agency, or who is a member of the Texas military forces, excluding Texas State Guard members who are serving in the Texas Legislature, may apply for a license under this subchapter.
Emphasis mine.
1. Many of us here have so many sets of finger prints on file with various government agencies. Unfortunately, they do not share them. That would be nice since they are digital now. I think you will have to resubmit them, but there is also a chance that you do not since you have held a valid CHL in Texas before. For this one, you may have to inquire to the DPS to find out if they still have your prints and if they are acceptable. Do you remember if your previous set was done electronically or with ink? Mine were originally done with ink and apparently done well enough that I did not have to resubmit them when they went digital and they were able to scan those originals into thendigital format.
2. Due to the above condition for a Peace Officer discount, I do not think you will qualify for the discount.

I spoke with DPS less than 30 minutes ago simply because I prefer talking with a real person and I am once again a newbie applicant but that is ok with me. I am just happy that I will soon be armed as my knife throwing skill is subpar !

Does that mean that you have to do the finger prints again even though you've held a valid CHL and they should still have them on file?

Does not matter how many times you have been fingerprinted, you will have to do it again. I have been fingerprinted 5 times now, LEO, TX Insurance Adjuster license, LTC, LTC instructor and Florida Insurance Adjuster license. I became an LTC instructor 4 months after getting my LTC and I had to get fingerprinted for each. Pretty sure whoever owns L1/Morpho Trust/whatever-the-company-name-is-today is related to some congresscritter somewhere and is benefiting from a government enforced monopoly.
But, then again, I could be totally wrong on that.

Yep, this.
When my employees ask if they can just use their fingerprints from when they <insert reason here> I tell them it isn't that you have been fingerprinted before, it's that we need the record of the person saying they are you right now.
It is a hassle, but the system works this way for a reason. If somebody with your identification submits prints that don't match your previous submissions, then you can expect all of your other licenses/privileges to be suspended until it gets straightened out.
