I have to look it up when I'm not tied down at the moment, but I do recall a college with a campus carry chapter that does just that. The report surfaced discussing how they organization was suing their respective college because the University cut the group's funding, which was used for range time and ammunition purchases tied to the range. The group had already been around before all these lawsuits and what not, and up until now had been using the range time to further educate students on the safe handling and proper use of weapons. I believe it was UT Austin.

I'll be happy to find this report and post it as an edit. Maybe I can find something on it when I get to UTD today, if not I'll find the actual report.

5 hours left until court deadline for rebuttals. Then the wait begins for the decisions to be issued. I'm guessing Friday for the decision on the Motion for Preliminary Injunction. Not sure if the decision on Motion to Dismiss will be released simultaneously (the Judge might need more time to write that one).

Now now, settle down. Else students will walk into class and find their prof is still in her "gun free" individual office, curled up under the desk in a fetal position.
At least I won't have to hear any more of their illconceived ideologies. I honestly had one professor try to convince me and the rest of my class that Edward Snowden is a hero. I didn't know whether to laugh cry or scream.

Now, now, Edward Snowden is a hero, for Russia. Since most professors are communists it makes complete sense that he would consider Snowden to be a hero.

In some subjects, you are being taught the substance, the how to do it. Accounting comes to mind here. Mathematics below a certain level, maybe engineering.

In other subjects, not so much. You are being exposed to thinking and reasoning. A prof who drones on and in only about orthodoxy, conventional wisdom, is cheating you.

Don't be afraid of ideas. Be afraid of people who urge you to fear ideas, be intolerant of new thoughts, etc. Learn to think for yourself. When you do, you analyze situations, figure out for yourself whether a new idea is helpful or not, unchained from the mind control that others ply you with.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

That is almost exactly the advice I gave my kids when they went to college. Learn everything you can, listen to other viewpoints even if they differ from yours, question everything, form your own opinions, not based on what is popular or what someone else tells you should believe, but based on your core beliefs, state you opinions without fear or shame, and don't let anyone sway you from them.

So don't fret too much about weird professors.

Somehow, somwhere, you have to perfect telling the clowns from the cowboys.

Case update:

The Judge today granted an unopposed request from the Plaintiffs for an extension of time to respond to the Motion(s) to Dismiss. The response from the Plaintiffs on the Motion(s) to Dismiss is now due on August 29th.

Also, each party today filed a final brief before the Judge makes his decision on whether to grant or deny the Motion for Preliminary Injunction. I am still guessing that the decision will issue on Friday.

In some instances, I'd tend to agree with you. For instance, I had a 'Texas State and Local Government' prof who was impossible to read his true colors. On any given day, while teaching a certain topic, he'd present it from a completely liberal perspective, and then later on (perhaps another day, perhaps not), he'd present it from a completely conservative perspective. He absolutely gave it his all from both viewpoints, and he did his best to convince us in both instances that the particular viewpoint was 'right and just'. This guy really wanted us to think it through, and challenged everyone's preconceived notions (rather than reinforce one side and challenge only the other).

However, when a prof doesn't do this - when he or she always presents one side as 'right' and the other as 'wrong', I am thoroughly disgusted. They shouldn't be there to indoctrinate young kids and narrow their thinking - rather they should be broadening the thoughts of the students.

v7a wrote:During the court hearing last Thursday it was mentioned that the AG had already planned to file a Motion to Dismiss this week.

The motion was filed today:

AG Motion to Dismiss
UT Motion to Dismiss

The judge will now be ruling on two separate motions: Motion for Preliminary Injunction (requested by plaintiffs) and Motion to Dismiss (requested by defendants).

The deadline for rebuttals is Wednesday 5pm. A ruling on the Motion for Preliminary Injunction is likely to be issued by Friday.
I'm not a lawyer but I love reading stuff like this. Both looked very well thought out and well presented.

Yep, been going since last August. Gonna use this break to get some new software and gear, and hit the range more than once or twice a week.

Reading through the 3 documents, I have to laugh at the absurdity of the Plaintiff's case and support thereof.

Additionally, I find it amusing that the words of UT's lawyers may come back to bite them when they are trying to defend the "professors can make their single occupancy offices off limits".

Fun stuff. I look forward to seeing where this goes. I don't anticipate the dismissal to be granted, but I do expect to see the preliminary injunction shot down.

The plaintiff's memorandums are garbage, and I'm a legal dummy. Quite literally all over the place and not answering challenges to their claim.

This should be dismissed outright.
