Credit Unions and 30.06/30.07
Thought I would update on my saga with the posting of 30.06/30.07 signs. I have been a member of the Shell Federal Credit Union for several decades. They posted both the 30.06 and 30.07 after the first of the year. I have been in discussions with a member of the board of directors (concerning the signs going up) for months. I was told that both signs went up because of insurance requirements. I got the final statement from the board last week and the signs are staying up. So, I started checking other credit unions and found that the Texas Dow Federal Credit Union (an even larger credit union) prohibits open carry but allows concealed county in all their branches (confirmed with their management). I have started the process to move my account to the Texas Dow Federal Credit Union and will close out my account at the Shell Federal Credit Union. I have to wonder about insurance requirements that prohibit concealed carry at one major credit union and not another. It would be easy to think that there is more than insurance requirements involved. There are options and a way to send a signal to those that way to restrict our legal rights.

Re: Credit Unions and 30.06/30.07
Insurance requirements are a red herring. Nobody has been able to substantiate any insurance contract requiring specific postings.
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"
Re: Credit Unions and 30.06/30.07
From other posts on this forum nobody has ever seen an insurance policy that required a no carry ban on their business. My insurance policy didn't have one. Can you get Shell to show you the policy ( I doubt it).
Re: Credit Unions and 30.06/30.07
I would like to see an insurance policy that requires a 30.06/.07 sign. The few times this has been told to me no one can ever produce the policy in writing.
Re: Credit Unions and 30.06/30.07
My bank also posted 30.06 and 30.07 after the 1st of the year and I ended up speaking with the president about it, after a couple of e-mails back and forth. At 1st he held the line about "for the safety of customers and employees" junk, but when I didn't buy it and offered some rebuttal, he admitted he agreed with my thinking but - in his words - "nearly every banking association highly recommends the posting for national banks." This, in addition to the fact that they were coming up on a banking audit in July, makes me think that, although there may be no specific wording, they are made to feel like it would be better for them when the auditors show up.
I too am looking at other banks that don't (at this time) have posted 30.06 signs and wondering if there are some that will hold out or if it is just a matter of time. As I left his office that day, I did tell him that they needed to do away with the slogan "your hometown bank" because it wasn't as long as the 30.06 sign was up.

Re: Credit Unions and 30.06/30.07
Folks,
No, I can't get a copy of the policy, just what I am told by the board of directors. They are free to do what they want and so am I. I had a number of discussions with the board member to explain why I though their policy was a mistake (both safety for members and employees as well as the inconsistency with other financial institutions).
If I never had to go indoors, I would not care but I do have to go in on occasion.

I am very fortunate because my CU in Tyler is not posted either way. The Bank I use for the church and personal things at time is only posted 30.07. I do know local Banks are few and far between.
Re: Credit Unions and 30.06/30.07
I have learned over the years small credit unions and banks literally just make up rules as they go. It seems the smaller the bank the worse is it sometimes with their made up rules. I even printed out the actual laws before and took them to the bank and they still didnt care. I had problems making larger purchases where the bank wouldn't raise my check card limits and also access a safety deposit box one time. After days of fighting with them I was able to close all my accounts and got a couple relatives to close their accounts also. I refuse to ever give them another penny out of principle.

Just for the record, the Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union in Seguin has no postings about licensed carry whatsoever. In the past had driven past and not seen anything on the doors, but had the occasion on Saturday to go into the lobby. Security guard chatting with the woman at the information desk, but no postings.

I'm the director of the Texas Dow Federal Credit Union. (TDFCC) I would like to thank you for bringing this oversight on our part to post 30.06/30.07 signs at all of our facilities. The signs have been ordered and will be posted as soon as possible. We are grateful we were made aware of this before our insurance carrier was alerted to this. Thanks for the heads up.LTUME1978 wrote:Thought I would update on my saga with the posting of 30.06/30.07 signs. I have been a member of the Shell Federal Credit Union for several decades. Gotcha! Just kidding! But we all need to be careful of what we post on open forums.

Texas Trust Credit Union was posted 30.06 before the first of the year, but they took those down and posted 30.07 January 1. I have no real problem concealing while banking, as long as I can still be armed. However, they have started charging a monthly fee for checking, unless you are quite rich and have a lot of loans and stuff through them. I will be looking to take my business elsewhere soon because of this. Last I checked, Chase and Frost are both completely unposted. I don't know if they offer free checking.
I prefer dangerous freedom to safety in chains.

The Wall,
Very funny! Before I decided to move my money to the TDEFCU, I had discussions with their management to ensure that they would not post the 30.06 and was assured that would not happen. Just sharing what I have learned with others in southeast Texas dealing with the same problems.

I am licensed in the state of Texas for property and casualty, I have never seen a business policy that requires a business to put up signs unless it deals with security systems. I will double check and follow up in this post but to my knowledge this is not correct.carlson1 wrote:I would like to see an insurance policy that requires a 30.06/.07 sign. Edit: Rates are based off of other factors that have nothing to do with signage. Though you can get a discount for having alarm systems or security guards. Also, rates have to be submitted to the state for approval. The state of Texas regulates what kind of discounts we can/cannot give. Hope this information helps.

Chase is completely unposted. I CC there regularly, but I haven't OC'd. I've never been inside of a Frost branch, but I did research them a bit. I believe that both require a fairly substantial balance in order to get free checking. It is tough to find free checking anywhere unless you have at least $10,000 in deposits. Chase will also give you a free safe deposit box if you have the right kind of account. Importantly, some banks include things like mortgages and IRA accounts in their required balances (I know that Wells Fargo, another unposted option does this). So you don't necessarily need to be "rich".LucasMcCain wrote:Texas Trust Credit Union was posted 30.06 before the first of the year, but they took those down and posted 30.07 January 1. A simple research probe into a few underwriters should provide the rules or where they can be found. Each underwriter may have their own rules...such as the owner of the underwriter doesn't like guns so he won't underwrite those policies.
