BREAKING: A military coup in Turkey has overthrown the govt

Post by The Annoyed Man »

Apparently, the Turkish army has made a coup d'etat and taken over.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/ ... eize-power
http://news.sky.com/story/turkish-milit ... y-10503039

Per Sky News:
According to Turkish media, the military statement said the army had taken action to: "reinstall the constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms, to ensure that the rule of law once again reigns in the country, for the law and order to be reinstated."

The military statement went on to say that "all international agreements and commitments will remain. We pledge that good relations with all world countries will continue."

From what I understand the Turkish military is attempting to overthrow a duly elected constitutional government. I know Turkey is a key NATO ally, and U.S. fighters launch from our air base over there in this so-called "war on ISIS".

this is still unfolding atm.

From what I understand this is a good thing.

Remember when Turkish government almost provoked a war with Russia, who ought to be our natural ally against Islamofascist?

I never considered Erdogan an ally, especially since his regime has been known supplier and buyer of ISIS oil, look it up I'm driving

I have a hunch that this signals a collapse in Islamic dictatorship, but again, might be too early to tell.

But just wait for BO's response. If he is against it, then it's a good thing.

It doesn't seem clear whether or not it will be successful. Lots of folks in the streets, and it isn't obvious which way it will go.
Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.

Erdogan is face timing (the irony) from outside Ankara. It's already over.
Only the Islamists will be demonstrating and the military will make easy work of it, I believe.

I am processing this to determine if this is a good thing or not. What role should the US take, if any?

I'm tired of the US getting involved in other nations' internal strife. However, it may be called for to protect our interests.

'We have taken control': Turkish military launch coup to depose Islamist government - as President Erdogan FaceTimes TV station and urges his supporters to fight while he hides in a hotel room
  • Turkish troops have launched a military coup according to the government with helicopters firing on capital Ankara
  • Turkish PM Binali Yildirim told reporters: 'We will not allow this attempt' although the military said they are in control
  • Explosions and gunfire have been reported in several locations with fast attack jets patrolling over the skies
  • The Turkish military claimed they have taken power in order to protect the civil rights of the population
  • President Recep Erdogan has used 'FaceTime' to call on the population to take to the streets to oppose the coup
It sounds like it might not be a bad thing, if it is getting rid of an Islamist gov't.......even if that gov't was elected.

My suspicion is that there will be a ground swell of Muslims around the globe demanding reformation. People have had enough of this, and though I am not a fan of Gingrich, he was 100% right when he said that those who believe in Sharia Law must be deported.

The Sharia loving/supporting ones are going to see their days numbered.

That is my hope at least.

Does not look good and if the people supporting the government are in the streets and it seems people are going into the street. The Military would not shoot at civilians and the coup would fail. Erdogan would prevail. If the coup get foot hold and then there would be no election for the next 10yrs or so. That is there is no democracy, nor constitution to defend.
