Re: Academy and Buying Ammo and carded?
ive been asked for id for handgun ammo before at different stores simply to verify age, which im fine with....but recording my information and storing it when not required by law? no thanks.
Re: Academy and Buying Ammo and carded?
I have spent almost $2,400 at Academy just this year on guns and ammo. I guess I'll have to start making the drive to Bass Pro, now.
Re: Academy and Buying Ammo and carded?
Are the ammo prices really that good at local stores like Academy, Bass Pro, etc?
I've been ordering online for years and don't even check anymore when I'm in those stores.
FWIW, I ordered 500 rounds of .45 from Freedom Munitions a few weeks back for $107. That's including shipping.
And it wasn't steel case or reman. New brass FMJ.
But if those kinds of deals can be found locally, that would be great.

I am a registered voter. I am not a registered gun owner. Who would buy ammo if it wasn't for a gun?JALLEN wrote:What is the objection to producing ID?

I've never seen that kind of price in any store in this area.Ryan wrote:Are the ammo prices really that good at local stores like Academy, Bass Pro, etc?

Re: Academy and Buying Ammo and carded?
I just went to the Academy website. Indeed the AR's that were in Sunday's add have been removed. I went to their customer service area and sent them an email asking about the "rumors" I was hearing today and asked if any of it was true to see if I can get a statement. I also mentioned that I was a long time customer and have spent $2,400 with them just since the first of this year and that I would have to take my business elsewhere if they pull a knee/jerk reaction like that. Seems like they would remember what happened to Cheaper Than Dirt a few years ago.

Re: Academy and Buying Ammo and carded?
As for Academy pulling AR's from the shelves, I can't vouch for them actually being "pulled" at the one in the Willowbrook area of Houston, BUT I can certainly vouch for the fact that there were none actually on the shelves. The long-gun racks were indeed full though.
That said, the $499 AR they advertised on Sunday was indeed available, and I just bought the last one at that store...
It's worth noting that my box is labeled "Display" leading me to wonder if this rifle had been on the shelf before the hullabaloo.
They're available though, and they're honoring the price whether they're actually on the display shelf or not. I did see a few other "evil black guns" on the shelves, and I was in a bit of a hurry, so I didn't pay too much attention to what they had in inventory.
On a slightly different note, had I not watched him make a gun sale just prior to mine, I would have thought it was the first time in his life he'd ever seen a form 4473, and he couldn't seem to break from his sales pitch/process to just sell the darn gun!
It took over an hour from "I want xyx" to walking out the door...should have been a 10 minute transaction, including filling out the 4473.

Re: Academy and Buying Ammo and carded?
I get most of my standard ammo calibers from wally world. The odd stuff I can find at BassPro for a decent price most of the time. Occasionally, I'll have to order something from an online place, but that's mostly because I can't find it in a store at all. BassPro's prices on target/plinking .45 or .223 just doesn't compare to wally world's prices for the same box of ammo. It's hard to when WW purchases so much and can get good bulk prices.

Well if this is all true I'll start getting my ammo elsewhere. I'll keep an eye out next time I'm in one...

Re: Academy and Buying Ammo and carded?
From my experience, it has ranged from 30 minutes to an hour at Academy. I don't think I have ever hit the 10 minute mark, but some places are better than others, and Academy can tend to be on the longer side.cbunt1 wrote:As for Academy pulling AR's from the shelves, I can't vouch for them actually being "pulled" at the one in the Willowbrook area of Houston, BUT I can certainly vouch for the fact that there were none actually on the shelves. I can confirm that the Bunker Hill store in Houston had all of the "evil" rifles pulled off the shelves when I stopped by yesterday. Ammo was interesting. They had pulled some .223 and 5.56 off the shelves, but left other ammo in those same calibers on the shelf. Very strange.

I hope so, I liked shopping at academy. Now I will have to go to wally world and look around for a store associate to unlock the ammo.Beiruty wrote:One day NRA would have retail stores.

Re: Academy and Buying Ammo and carded?
The information states they ask for ID if you purchase a large quantity of ammo for what they think is an "assault weapon" style gun. Go back and purchase 10 boxes of .223 and then let us know what happens.E.Marquez wrote:Today in Killeen Texas I purchased 400 Rds .45, 100 Rds .380, 300 rds .22......
