Rifle-shell pen makers?

#1

Post by Vol Texan »

Does anyone here make (or know someone who makes) pens out of rifle shell casings?

I'm not looking for one of the ones I can buy online - this is a bit different.

I was in a colleague's office, and I noticed on his shelf he has the folded flag in a presentation case from his father's casket on display. Inside the case was a rifle shell casing, and I asked what is was for. He said it was one of the fired shell casings from his dad's 21-gun salute. He also has the others, and doesn't know what to do with them. He wants to find a way to share with his siblings, but he wants it to be something special.

I suggested getting pens made out of them, and showed him some examples online. He's not a shootist himself, so I offered to do a little investigation for him.

I can look online and start calling companies at random, but I figured I'd reach out here first.
So...is there anyone on this forum with that expertise? Anyone who can craft something nice for him? Or have any of you used a specific company in the past that you can recommend (so I don't have to start at square one in my search)?

Attached are photos of the one casing he has now.

Don't see why you couldn't easily swap over the casings.

There is (or was) a forum member here who made them, but I can't remember who it was......

There are often people at the gun shows that make and sell those, however, I'm not sure I would trust them with something irreplaceable. If it were me I'd check the local woodturning club and see if there's someone there I felt comfortable with. You could probably find someone that might perhaps be able to customize it to your needs/wants.

Gulf Coast Wood Turners Assn. or
Lone Star Wood Turners Assn.

That was tateb24: http://www.texaschlforum.com/viewtopic. ... 14&t=56917.

He's still around the Forum, so it might be worth a contact from Vol Texan.

I know a guy in San Angelo who makes these. I have bought several from him and has many different styles (to include American flag). PM me and I will send you his info...
