Hello friends,
I have recently purchased a new AR15...and plan on getting out to the range this weekend to shoot it for the first time. Any tips from you guys that are a bit more experienced with the "black rifle" would be appreciated. I tried AR15. com and if any of you have had any experienced that site, I am sure you know why I am asking for information here....it is very difficult on that site to sift through the people who know what they are talking about and the ones that are just trolling and being rude to the participants. My experience with handguns is broad, but rifles, especially military style rifles is a new world for me. Thanks in advance for any help!! :lol:

Are you going to PSC? If so, when? I'll be there Saturday afternoon, but I'm not sure what time. I have to let my legal assistant try a pistol or two before deciding on a gun to carry. If we can be there at the same time, I can show you a few tips I learned over the years.

You will probably really, really like your little black rifle! Even stock out of the box, they are more accurate than most people expect.

It is modular; you can configure it any way you want, and have multiple top ends for different purposes - shorty carbine, scoped/long barrel varmint, service rifle, match rifle. With the right barrel and load, you can hold the 10-ring at 600 yards.

Some people do not like the .223 round for "stopping power" (I have no experience shooting at people so I have no opinion) but your lower will take a 6.8 SPC upper if you are so inclined.

You are also welcome at the Highpower Match. Greenwood and Bayou Rifles (the club with which I'm associated) both have 600 yard ranges. Highpower shooters are friendly and supportive; rather than ragging someone about a mediocre score, they will generally offer informal coaching and tips. Amazing what benefits a little black rifle can bring!

Lots of AR shooting in the Houston area.

2nd Saturday of the month we shoot a multi-gun (carbine, shotgun, pistol) match out at eagle lake (I'm the MD).

3rd Saturday of the month there is a carbine only match after the IDPA match at Eagle Lake. Shoot the IDPA match with carbines (mostly ARs)

Check out the ImpactZone (Brookshire) web site. Phil brings in AR instructors to conduct 1 & 2 day classes.

Matt Burkett has a great DVD on setting up the AR and shooting in competition.

As you can tell I am more interested in "action" shooting.

Best thing I have learned is to keep it clean and wet (CLP).

I will be purchasing a black rifle kit in the future and have been browsing the site for a few weeks.

IMHO, the slammers and trolls are pretty easy to detect on AR15.com. There are lots of opinions on all of the different lowers, uppers, LPK's, FCG's, sights, barrels, and all other aspects of building a functional AR. The site has mucho AR porn to view. I would pay attentuion to any bad comments you find on any accessories you want to purchase, or modoficatiions. The search feature works pretty well.

After my next assignment I will buy a bunch of parts and build my first one. I am salivating heavily, and my vision is blurry.....must remain calm.

AR-15.com is really not a site I frequent...I only go there to view information on technical issues, and have probably only posted 4-5 times over the last 5 years or so...

There are too many people over there that really come across as wannabes and let you know it every chance they get...

All the folks that post with all this Special Ops experience I kinda enjoy testing the envelope...

I think the last reply I made to one of those folks was...

"thats a really neat story..."

What he claimed he could do with a "combat knife"...I told him I was taught a few things that I could do with my thumb, by someone that could take the knife away from him and make him look silly...

That went over real well... :lol:
