A new kind of lever action shotgun has been made to circumvent Australia's ban of the pump action shotgun. Western Australia actually has shooting ranges where children can shoot a gun.

"At least we're not in the same situation as the United States."

Australia's reforms have become an international model for gun control and have been held as an example in the fierce firearms law debate in the US.

President Barack Obama has cited Australia in his battle for gun reform, but failed to overcome vocal and entrenched opposition backed by the powerful National Rifle Association."

I guess it is easier to have a boogie man in the NRA than to recognize we have constitutional protection, rights, and they had none.

While mass murder committed with a firearm may have been deterred by Australia's gun ban, evil still finds a way to express itself. I believe the number of victims beaten, stabbed or burnt to death in arson fires in Australian mass murders since the gun ban is over 65.

I wish people would not use islands as examples of how gun control "works". UK, Australia, Hawaii all have low murders per 100,000 people. In addition to restrictive gun laws, they also have low proportions of the sort of people who murder.
