Veteran / Senior Discount
Is there any age restriction or limit to the time that has passed since one served in the Armed Forces to qualify for the Veterans discount? Does it get discounted further for also being a "senior"?
I am 68 and served in Vietnam getting out in 1972. What would my fee be:
$70 for Seniors?
$25 for veterans? or
$12.50 combing the Veterans fee with a 50% senior discount?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure you just get one discount, and the best option is the veterans discount. There is no time limit on when you can claim your veteran status.

Yep, I got out of the Air Force in 1965 and got the Veteran pricing. And NO, you cannot get both Vet and Sr. I asked.
When I first got my CHL, Veteran and Senior were the same fee. Last time I renewed, I changed to Veteran. Got Vet pricing and "Veteran" status on the plastic.

As long as you have a DD-214 showing Honorable Discharge or an actual Honorable Discharge certificate, it don't matter how old it is. Only one discount so go with the Veteran.

Make sure it's your full DD-214, the one that has your discharge conditions on it (Honorable). I just read that someone send in their short form DD-214 and it got rejected. Needs to be the long-form.

Re: Veteran / Senior Discount
Another thread in this forum talked about someone with a General Discharge, Under Honorable Conditions, getting the vet's discount and even getting the word Veteran shown on his CHL. There was lots of discussion about types of discharges and apparently the OP got DPS to change their interpretation of the CHL law. Interesting.AF-Odin wrote:As long as you have a DD-214 showing Honorable Discharge or an actual Honorable Discharge certificate, it don't matter how old it is. Re: Veteran / Senior Discount
Thanks for all of the input. I do have a copy of my long form DD-214. In fact, I have 2, one discharging me from my enlisted status to accept my commission and the other when I was ultimately discharged from active duty. Veteran status will be the way I go as there is a big difference in the fee.

Before sending it in, I scanned my DD-214 and deleted/erased the block that held my Social Security number. I was in about the same time as you, and at that time the military used SSAN for serial numbers. I recommend you do the same, or at least just make a copy and white out the SSAN block for personal security purposes.

ummm Der, isn't your ssan required on the application for the CHL anyway? umm and I know for a fact its tied to your DL, so what purpose does redacting your ssan serve?der Teufel wrote:Before sending it in, I scanned my DD-214 and deleted/erased the block that held my Social Security number. They're doing a complete background check on LTC applicants, I don't think blocking out your social on the DD-214 is going to protect you from some kind of malicious act on behalf of the regulatory services division.

Re: Veteran / Senior Discount
I'm over 60 I took the senior discount. I was never in the military. It is quick and easy to get the senior discount
go with the senior. Also if you are in the DFW area Texas Hand Gun Academy has a discount for Seniors over 60 on their classes.
The classes are 7 days a week and it is easy to get in

You're probably right.
I just make it a habit to delete the SSAN from my DD-214 whenever I have to submit it anywhere. Can't remember if the VA cared, but I got a discount on my Sprint phone bill for being a veteran. I just avoid giving out pieces of paper with my SSAN whenever I can.
Habit.

Re: Veteran / Senior Discount
I have the veteran endorsement on both my DL and my LTC. Makes receiving veteran discounts a lot easier because I don't have to carry my DD214.casp625 wrote:I just found out AT&T expanded there military discount to include veterans. Re: Veteran / Senior Discount
I have been out of the service 25+ years and just got my DD214. I was on terminal leave when I was discharged and never received one. Easy to get one online though. When I got my CHL I took a senior discount. What's the routine for getting vet discount when you renew? Do you just include a DD214 with paperwork? I still have a way to go before renewal and just curious from those that have done it.
