Queens man arrested for huge stockpile of weapons including 17 guns, 225 pounds of gun powder and thousands rounds

Okay so we know that this stockpile is not huge and NY is criminally infringing on the second but my question is how many pounds of gun powder can one stockpile before the authorities get nervous and require appropriate licenses and hazmat precautions?

225 pounds seems like a lot. 17 weapons is just a day trip!

Every day I find more and more reasons that I'm glad to have been born, raised, and still reside in Texas!!!

This is just so invasive, besides laws requiring the guns be stored in a safe, what was he guilty of? is it illegal to reload in NYC? Forgive my ignorance, but I don't keep updated on all of the communist laws passed in other places.

225 pounds does sound like a lot of powder. But volume-wise I'd assume that it's really not that much. Let's say that it comes in boxes that are about 1ft x 1ft x 1ft (1 cubic foot) and each box weighs 45 pounds. That's just 5 boxes.

For reference, a cubic foot bag of cement weighs 80LBs.

so if he saw a really good deal on bulk gunpowder, maybe this is enough to last him a couple of years in the reloading room...

Surely someone who is a reloader can tell us about how many pounds they would go through in a year..

There are some limits to what you can keep in a home without taking certain storage precautions, but they come from the Fire Marshall rather than the ATF. I don't remember exactly where they are, but you begin to get into the realm of storage precautions in what I call the "heavy/competition re-loader" space -- maybe 10,000 primers and 25# of powder or so...

But the requirements are pretty basic -- wood-lined storage cabinets and such.

For reference, an 8# "keg" of powder is typically about a gallon-sized jug--but you can put close to 12# of powder in one (They use a standard production HDPE jug these days). I once got in on a bulk deal on some powder that came in plastic bags inside cardboard boxes -- a 32# box of powder came to us in what looked like a hat-box, or a stacked pair of boot-boxes.

I admit to having issues with 225 lbs of powder but I also have powder "laying around" at times. Of course everyones definition of laying around is a little different. That much powder not stored properly..... not something that most reloaders that I know would do. So, how much was "laying around", one 1lb container ? A little more, a little less ? The weapons, it says, were all licensed & legal but storage was apparently lacking. Screwed up, sure. That is NYC. Laws were broken, a good reason to not live in New York or some other places.

My understanding is you are limited to 200 rounds of ammunition, 20 lbs of smokeless powder and 5 lbs black powder. For an individual to exceed these levels requires FD and Bdlg. permits and an approved magazine.
If you exceed these limits, the prevailing authority can fine you, FD $1200.00, Bdlg. $1600.00. The reckless endangerment charge would be at the discretion of the PD.

Seems to me like we see more and more of this. Thankfully it's limited to places like New York, California, Illinois, and New Orleans to name a few. But all it would take is enough "educated" college boys and girls to send us right into socialist heaven. Apparently there are a lot of police who will take your guns. But I guess if it's a few blocks from a school then it's ok.

225 lbs of powder in an apartment where other lives could be endangered, seems excessive, but it appears that all of the firearms were licensed. Why do they have an issue with those?

We got video. Look at this garbage in my yard at 3:30 am. Watch him run like the coward he is when I spot light him. I didn't think they could run that fast with the pants pulled down!

I called the police but he was gone. They got there pretty quick though.

By chance do have a law or regulation cite for that?

Id be willing to bet most every user in this forum is in violation of the 200 round rule at home. Heck what i carry on me and in my chosen daily vehicle exceeds that number.

I think that would be in NYC I don't think Texas has such a restriction, but I'm no lawyer but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn.

There are federal regs but I don't know who follows them. 10,000 primers in a residence...

Same regs for powder

This guy was probably in violation but when supplies are short you need to stock up. Hazmat powder purchases I believe allow up to 48#.

Title 38 RCNY Rev. 2010. I want to say it was in chapter 2, but it could be chapter 1.
I learned about this, after FDNY "raided" a construction site where a sub was using power fasteners (.22 blanks) and he was caught with 312. Same rules as ammo, $1200.00 fine and confiscation of materials.

Thanks.. I did not read your other post that you were referencing a NY law.. Now it makes sense .. well not in general,, but for something in NY it makes sense
