Well, I for one did graduate with a STEM degree in Engineering from Texas A&M, I would like to think that a majority of the students that attend that university are above average in being aware of what's going on in the country around them, but I'm not so sure anymore.

I try to pay attention to world events and politicians to hold them accountable, I could careless what jersey shore or the Kardashians are doing. But, then again, I don't think Fireball whiskey is the best alcohol around either, so I may just be an exception to the rule.

Unless it has changed dramatically since my oldest was there about 10 years ago the majority are not informed or aware. As an engineer myself, even though I'm old, I think I can say with confidence that the people you most associated with were in an entirely different intellectual class than the majority of liberal arts students.

You need only look at a distribution of IQ by major to observe the well established intellectual differences between the sciences and the liberal arts....such as they are. Today's liberal arts are not your grandfather's liberal arts. That isn't to say higher IQ necessarily means better informed or less misinformed. My youngest went to law school with plenty of high IQ and misinformed students. Nor does lower IQ necessary mean uninformed or misinformed, though I think it safe to assume some correlation exists between IQ and ignorance.

Though my profession is a much smaller piece of the population than most and there are many fewer colleges/universities that offer degrees in it, by random sampling of those I know in it across this country and in some ways across the globe, I would say that surveyors average IQ surpasses all of those listed here with a probable IQ of 140+.

Of course we are also an aging profession with the average age of those licensed to practice being about 58 in this country.

While I can't comment on the aptitude of the average graduate in those majors there is no doubt whatsoever that only the very brightest with the highest IQs are competitive in those fields.

OTOH, Richard P Feynman had a reported IQ of 124, so either the test didn't accurately reflect his IQ for whatever reason or his IQ not being Einsteinian didn't limit his achievements. And he is said to have done exceedingly well on his Princeton entrance exams.

A four year degree from almost any university is laughable.

Those who earn degrees in science aren't exposed as much, but sadly, they're still exposed to some of this poison.

Yeah I am watching some MIT computer science lectures to learn different angles of programming and during a couple of lectures I've seen instructor's/professors either have to cut themselves off when they start a leftist political rant, or have a grad assistant or a student speak up to pull them back. Only 9% of the population has an IQ above 120. 75% of the population has an IQ less than 109. Generally speaking an IQ in the range of 100-110 is considered necessary for successful completion of college.

Yes, I have, and I'm sure the success and competitiveness of many people with high IQs are hampered by their personality. I remember a line in a movie some years back to this effect: "Good at chess, bad at life." I think a case can be made that very high IQ correlates with personality deficits and psychological problems. Or to put it another way, I'd guess a disproportionate number of people with high IQs have coping and personality problems.

I might also add that his personality issues effected all of his relationships, not just his professional life.

Shockley died in 1989 of prostate cancer at age 79. By the time of his death he was almost completely estranged from most of his friends and family, except his second wife, the former Emmy Lanning (1913–2007).
His children are reported to have learned of his death only through the print media. Dr. Shockley is interred at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, California.
