mayor,

Are you a Penny-farthing rider, wear skinny jeans, drink PBR, live in a trust funded loft, think of yourself as a kid though you're a technical adult, (kidult) discuss craft beer to the level of making others want to scream, consider 'performance art' as real art, consider yourself an artist and never call yourself a hipster...?

No, then ok, you get a pass.

But, I have to add, a straight razor is why they invented a safety razor.

Using a straight razor isn't retro, it's edging dangerously into narcissistic metro-sexulism...so please, don't start discussing your favorite brush, shaving soap, skin toner, and European after shave.

A few years ago a co-worker had come to my desk in the lab for something. I'm sitting at my computer, looking up what he needs and he's standing behind me.

Him: "What's that cologne you're wearing?"
Me: "I'm not wearing cologne."
Him: "Than what do I smell?"
Me: "Soap."
Him: "What kind?"
Me: "Irish Spring."

Do I get to keep my Real Man card?

Pawpaw,

Yes, yes you do.

Your co-worker, no.

No normal man asks another man such a weird question, not that there's anything wrong with that, wink, wink...

none of the above. I don't even know what a Penny-farthing rider is (I googled it and that's pretty funny), wear wranglers, drink Knob Creek when I can afford to buy a pint, beginning to feel old, but can still replace transmissions and engines, and if playing upright bass in a bluegrass band makes me a hipster... so be it. I use a straight razor because i got tired of paying so much for those 5 pack of 5 bladed disposables razor head thingys. AND straight razors shave close, just not fast. it's kinda scary knowing i can cut my head clean off if i sneeze at the wrong time - and thanks for the pass!

mayor,

You're a good sport!

I love Knob Creek, but Grandpappy Van Winkle is something you might try when you have some discretionary income.

I also love bluegrass.

I'm a fan of Ricky Skaggs among others.

A couple years ago I started buying Shark Super Stainless Double Edge blades [Amazon].
They are much cheaper than the disposable and are very sharp.
It took me a few times to get used them, but fortunately I also had a styptic pencil.

WildBill,

I wonder how many of the youthful shavers even know what a styptic pencil is?

I have to shave my ear lobes once a week (yeah, I'm like a bald werewolf, I have tufted ears...) and almost always manage to cut them so I keep my styptic pencil at the ready.

mayor,

I meant to ask you: 1. How long did it take for you to be proficient with your straight razor?

2. Or, put another way: Do you always/sometimes/never come away from a shave unscathed?

I might consider adding:

o Know to to tie a real tie
o know how to change a flat tire and replace a dead battery
(I thought about know how to bleed your brakes, but didn't want to be over the top!)
o Know how to hook up, load, and haul a trailer, including backing up (what, you don't have a trailer?)
o Know how to dock a boat safely in a following sea
o Know how to field strip and clean / lube all of your firearms
o Know how to make correct decisions without all the data

Extremely important in all aspects of life. If you can't get more info in the time frame needed make the best decision you can with what you've got! If you're wrong, learn and get over it. DO NOT EVER be the "I don't know what to do" person.

All very very good advise and wise rules to live by! As a 31 yr old man, with a 7yr old step son I will be teaching him as much of these things, if not all of these. Keep them coming!
