Lubbock council rejects bans on guns in public meetings

On the plus side:

After several hours of hearing citizens’ comments at Thursday's council meeting, city leaders voted to reject two resolutions aimed at disallowing concealed and open carry during council meetings. The two resolutions were presented by Councilwoman Latrelle Joy, and both failed by a vote of 5-2.

On the minus side:

City Manager James Loomis’ protocol requires city employees with a concealed handgun license wishing to carry at work or in their city-owned vehicle to fill out an application for approval. Robertson’s resolution to do away with that requirement failed 5-2, with Mayor Pro Tem Jim Gerlt also voting for it.

Robertson said prior to the vote that several city employees have reached out to him encouraging his action, especially from the fire and utility department. He said his concerns are putting their employees at a disadvantage

On the nonsense side:

Councilman Floyd Price voted with Joy for the resolutions, saying several times during public comments that it’s not correct to assume all CHL holders are peaceful, and a chamber full of people openly carrying handguns could cause confusion for the police officer who’s paid for protection.

I've been waiting to see if any of the 3 bigger cities in my area will host an event such as a public forum or a Q&A... nothing.

Yes but that doesn't mean our local cities are going to do the same as those cities... For instance, you would think Temple, TX would do a forum considering that debacle they had 2 years ago

Have you seen how few showed up to some of those forums? I think they are good but I don't think they have a widespread effect of informing the masses, especially those that aren't in the CC/OC community.

Attendance has varied widely. In Elgin, Texas, about 40 people showed up. That's out of about 8400. Abilene had over 600 RSVP, over 500 showed up. They had to change the venue three times before the meeting to accommodate the crowd. The first Houston meeting was SRO. Fort Bend County had good attendance, although the video did not show the whole room.

On the flip side, the second HPD meeting was less well-attended and the Round Rock attendance also seemed sparse.

All this is hardly statistically significant. However, I feel it does show that interest varies widely across the state. In the end, I expect that my fellow Texans will be able to adjust at least as well as the Okies have done.

I'm done. HB910 (Open Carry) goes into effect this Friday, 1/1/16. I've been posting these links to help folks get out of the echo chamber and hear what our fellow Texans are saying. Now it is time to watch what happens.

I've been encouraged by the attitude of many police departments in stating they would not approach a person carrying openly for only the act of carrying openly. I've spoken with the Chiefs of my city's PD and this is their view. I've been disappointed by my fellow Texans' not adjusting to the change as well as the Okies did. Maybe three years down the road we will catch up.

I feel it remains important for us to politely discuss our differences using logic and facts rather than emotions and baseless fears as the anti-gun folks do.

My opinion is my own and is only important or applicable to me. My opinion is as valid to me as that of others is to them. The opinion of others concerning my opinion is of no importance to me. My opinion can change based on what I learn from others.

I've done my due diligence. I've conducted my risk analysis and studied the strategic and tactical issues. My decisions on self defense are based on an understanding of my own abilities and limitations, my situation and condition. This is not a one time process, but rather an ongoing one.

For all if us, as most things in life, it boils down to which risks we are willing to manage and which benefits matter most. We must also remember to consider how our actions impact others.

Let's all keep calm and carry.

The articles themselves didn't really shed much additional light on things that we didn't all know. There is the recurrent theme from police that it's legal as of 1/1, and that police don't want you to phone them every time you see a gun.

But what caught my attention was how breathtakingly ignorant most of the comments were, including people one woman who said if she saw anyone open carrying in her neighborhood, she would KEEP calling 911 until the person went home. My question to her: "What if he LIVES in your neighborhood?"

I have stated many times that, while I will likely not OC myself the vast majority of the time, I think passage was a good thing. But the dire predictions of mass slaughter and the threat of SWATting from ignorant nasty people is just stupefying.

Thanks for posting. I read them all. One comment in the above link struck me as odd.
"Ronnie Bush, who manages the Wal-Mart store on Hewitt Drive, said the largest retailer in America applies both federal and state law in addressing the issue of carrying firearms. His store does not allow the carrying of concealed weapons, and beginning Friday, it will not allow open carry."
I've been in probably a dozen around Houston. Many more in other parts of Texas. 5 or 6 in DFW - also Mansfield, Burleson, Waxahachie, Greenville, Quinlan, Galveston, Huntsville, San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos, Weatherford and points between. You get the picture. BUT I have never been to the Waco Walmart. I have never seen a Wal-Mart that disallows CC. Can anyone confirm what this manager was quoted as saying about the Waco WalMart on Hewitt Drive? If the store is indeed posted it certainly begs the question of who decides the policies at the stores.
