How soon is "too soon" to contact DPS for a status

Hey ya'll - I mailed my app in on the 25th May, it was received in Austin on the 29th May, it has now been 45 days or just over 6 weeks since they received this app. My question is - would it be premature and run the risk of irritating someone if I called to get a status now? It has been in "processing application" status for just over 4 weeks. If this is too soon to call - typically how long should I wait before calling?

Welcome to the forum.

Some have recieved their plastic in what seems like a couple of weeks and others have waited 90+ days. Law says 60 days.

I think if it were me that I would wait til around 50-55 day mark. Some will disagree with me but I gained some patience with age.

I would concur with RPBrown, I just checked my status, "Application Completed - license issued or certificate active", all this in 53 days. WHOOHOO!

Just keep checking, your time could be nearing an end.

I'm at day 35 since they recieved it and it is "Application Completed - license issued or certificate active" so I think it all depends on where you live.......

IMO, calling will not create additional problems.

It's possible that DPS mailed something to you and it didn't arrive.

Mage said that he thought that your domicle had something to do with time req'd to process the CHL.

I was under the impression that all apps went to Austin DPS.???

Where do you go to get a 'status report' on the application?

They send the Background check to your local DPS office and the FBI background check to the FBI......go to

Not that it makes any difference, but since the Texas DPS has a data base, a history with the DPS can be accessed by any authorized computer/modum. I don't understand why the request for background history should need to come from a specific Trooper district.


I tried to get a PIN to check on an application but, according to the website, I would need to enter my CHL number in addition to other information. That would make it a tad difficult to check on a pending application.

That could be a error on the page or the way that I am reading that page.

I will call Austin tomorrow and ask.

It askes for TX DL OR TX ID, DOB, SS and Pin.

The number stamped on the yellow application form (which you wrote on everything else, I hope) will be your license number when the license is issued.

Congrats on getting to this step. Waiting is hard. Having patience makes it all the sweeter when you get the plastic. I remember spending hour 6 in the classroom (they were smart to get us all out and shoot after the first 90 minutes of class) when one of the instructors informed us DPS was backed up and although that 60 day guarantee was in the books, they were looking at about a 90 day turnaround. Now, I'm not sure if they did this to our benefit because I received mine just over 70 days which still isn't as bad as thinking 90 days....it was a good way to work through the disappointment/aggravation in the beginning and be surprised at the end...but then again I waited 9 months for my NY state permit...ugh. It WILL arrive!

IMO, calling will not create additional problems.

It's possible that DPS mailed something to you and it didn't arrive.

This lost mailing thing seems to happen often. According to the law, the bureau will mail it to the applicant's address of record. That is the claim in several cases where applicants state they never received mail from the DPS. I cannot fathom or imagine the Postal Service not deliverying mail or losing it.

My CHL instructor goofed up my proficiency certificate somehow (I still have not determined how, unless he used the same number for two or more people because the TR100 form was completed in entirety). Supposedly, instructor called the DPS and emailed them, to correct the problem. I was never notified by DPS or the instructor and DPS extended my application for another 60 days or any problem. Arrggh.

I didn't make that error and had no way of correcting it without knowledge. I called them and found this out on day 51. If I need to refer to my proficiency certificate in the future, I will have an incorrect one. I have requested the correct one from the instructor, but I don't have much faith he'll provide it at this point.

I wonder how many letters are actually undelivered. The procedure is to post a local public notice I think and if the applicant doesn't respond in thirty days, then the DPS can finalize what the response was.

I don't know what the rate of lost and misdirected mail is. We get things in our mailbox that should have gone to someone with the same number on a different street, or to neighbors one or two houses down, several times a month.

I always bring them where they belong, but I can imagine some slob just tossing them out.

That is exactly what happened to our passports! Nobody ever sent them back to the USPS

Bummer.

U.S. passports are valuable in criminal circles. I lost mine (through my own carelessness) and it haunted me for several years. Every time I entered the country, I got special attention.
