Hundreds protest firearms being sold near school in McLean

Hysterical liberal idiots on the march. The article quotes one of the idiots as being "outraged," but really, is there such a thing as a liberal who isn't outraged?
MCLEAN, Va. (WUSA9) -- The opening of a new gun store in McLean brought out angry parents and neighbors with signs and bullhorns. It's not so much what they're selling as it is where.

Nova Firearms on Chain Bridge Road in McLean is the largest Virginia gun shop inside the Beltway. The problem for some parents, neighbors, school and political leaders is, see that building so close by? It's an elementary school.

“I'm very concerned that they chose to put a gun store in the backyard of a grade school,” Delegate Kathleen Murphy said. “I think it's an outrage.”

Wait a minute - hundreds are protesting? Looked more like 30.

Personally, I could think of worse things than a store promoting a civil right that demands responsibility where kids can see. Besides, the federal gun-free school zones act apparently exempts private property. I didn't know that, but I'm heartened. You can live next to a school and keep a gun in your home. It sounds like you're in trouble if you try to move it in or out of your home on public property, like the street in front of your house, but on your property you're cool.

And CHL's can carry on public property in school zones, at least handguns. Not sure about long guns, though.

Several commenting made the same observation, including a couple of people who claimed to live in the area and actually witness the protest.

When I saw that thread title, before I even opened the thread, that was my thought: "Hundreds, huh? Bugfuffel." 'Journalists' are innumerate in more ways than one.

ONLY in the state in which your license was issued. If you are in another state, even a state that has reciprocity, the 1,000 feet school zone keep out area applies.

I don't want to hijack your thread, but hear this out, and I'll shut up (for now  ).

We need to get this Federal law fixed. As it stands right now, I am breaking Federal law if I, as a CHL holder, carry my loaded handgun within 1,000 feet of school property (that's 1,000 feet from the school property line, not the school building itself) in any state other than Texas. One thousand feet is a long way!

I know many people downplay this law, saying that it's an "add-on" for gangbangers and such; that the Feds aren't going to hassle a clean-cut, upstanding, law-abiding citizen. And that may be true. But if I get pulled over in a school zone in Oklahoma while I am carrying, believe me, I will be sweating, because I AM breaking FEDERAL LAW!!! Do I really want to trust the next 5 to 15 years of my life to the mood that the local LEO happens to be in at that time? If we can get this law fixed, we don't have to worry about that situation at all.

Contact your US Senator and Representative about this problem with the Gun Free School Zone Act.

What is the danger of a gun store near a school anyway? The kids can't buy a gun. I would think the danger to kids would be higher if a drug store opened up.

The guns may sneak off the rack or out of the display case when the employees aren't looking, load their high capacity mags up, then slip out of the store and go on a rampage.

The High Powered Assault Weapons may sneak off the unsecured rack or out of the open display case when the employees aren't looking, load their high capacity Clips up with cop killer ammo, then slip out of the store and go on a rampage killing children in gun free zones where we KNOW guns can't possibly be.
Fixed it for ya VM

Yes, but I admit, your additions made it more obvious by including more anti slogans and catchphrases.

I thought it was sarcastic enough for further identification not to be necessary, but JP171's additions should end all doubt.

While this is the way the GFSZA has been interpreted by the ATF, it has not been tested in court. Even the law itself was a reaction to US vs. Lopez in which SCOTUS found the original GFSZA of 1990 did not have required nexus to interstate commerce for it to be Constitutional...and this was pre-Heller.

So far, some Circuit Courts have upheld the updated (1996) GFSZA, but not in the particular case of a person carrying with a reciprocally recognized license in another state. We should still should try to get it addressed at the federal level, but it really should be found unconstitutional. The Federal government is not supposed to have the broad police powers that the States have in these types of matters. :rules:
4/13/1996 Completed CHL Class, 4/16/1996 Fingerprints, Affidavits, and Application Mailed, 10/4/1996 Received CHL, renewed 1998, 2002, 2006, 2011, 2016...). "ATF... Uhhh...heh...heh....Alcohol, tobacco, and GUNS!! Cool!!!!"

Sure did, I wasn't sure which way it was, as it could've been either by the plain text alone.
