Any OWB holster I buy will have at least a strap to hold the pistol in. I fly hobby rockets for competition and sport. I've had the distinct pleasure of flying in Colorado. Recovering a rocket can be a very physically active operation. While my IWB holds my pistol just fine, I feel better having more retention when I carry openly.

I know this thread is OWB... I too have been considering OWB because of opencarry; a buddy has always carried OWB concealed.

My body has been blessed with the IWB retention device I call the belt tightener. I was thinking this "stomach expanding retention device" might still work with a holster worn Outside the Waistband, but INSIDE the BELT (Between the belt and pants)

I've IWB carried daily since about 2008
A) I prefer to conceal carry
B) IF I MUST Open Carry, I want some sort of additional retention for my own peace of mind, preferably NOT a thumb strap, for my own dexterity reasons

I have found one IWB WITH RETENTION where if there is a valid 30.06 but no valid 30.07 sign I can
OPEN CARRY IWB with RETENTION >> just pull up my shirt over the holster and still have passive stomach expansion-friction retention from belt tightening AND ACTIVE/POSITIVE retention on trigger guard, yet be IWB

Other IWB holsters exist with a thumbstrap retention like> Hero Holsters New Officer Model IWB Kydex Retention Holster

Still thinking wearing a belt over a OWB Pancake/slide holster, instead of the pancake/slide holster over a belt?

or

but no "extra" retention device there ...

Still shopping though

I have no affiliation with anyone :)

I'v never OWB carried...
OH wait ... yes I did OWB carry , "concealed" in Wilderness tactical carried a PT92 Taurus, but never open

NotRPB, interesting you bring this up. I really like how snug the gun is held to my side in my Crossbreed IWB holster. When I wear my OWB holster which is just mediocre quality I can feel it kind of bounce and wobble when I walk and move. That bothers me. I haven't thought to try threading the holster so it will be between the belt and pants.

Anyone else try this? Any real downfall to doing it this way?

If one chooses to carry a retention holster please make sure you can get the weapon out of the holster under stress. I worked security years ago and my Sargent, a former police officer, drilled it in our heads to practice drawing to insure proper technique. He also recommended using a holster with one retention due to more than one under stress without lots of training could lead to disaster. Having said that Safrailand is what we used.

I quit IWB about a year ago and have been OWB concealed since. Have holsters with and w/o thumb break, snap-in retention and couple with button to release. CC is OWB with no retention other than holster screw tension adjustment; in the field, generally use thumb break to prevent losing pistol. I have no plans to OC other than when in the field - same as now. No problems with thumb breaks, snap-in or button to release.

Wouldn't you need to get the wrong handed holster if you're going to flip it like this, especially if you use a canted holster?

I purchased an OWB holster and belt from Tucker Gunleather for my Springfield Armory XD(m). I asked for a thumb break to be added (it isn't an option available on their website). It's considered a special order ($35), but I think that it is worth the extra cost. I also added the cowhide lining which stiffens the holster, making for easier reholstering. It also protects the finish of the gun.

This is the best fitting, most comfortable, best looking holster that I own. :thumbs2:

No. It's still on the strong side. It's just a difference of threading the belt under then over rather than over then under.

Ah, I got it now. Brain flatulence on my side. I'm gonna give it a shot next time I carry OWB

I've carried this way with OWB when dressed up wearing a not-so-sturdy belt (before I started wearing IWB Appendix almost exclusively). The dress pants belt wasn't firm enough to keep the holster from pulling away from my body & tended to print a bit much. The only issue I noticed with this method (and you can refer to the photo NotRPB posted to see it) is that the belt puts tension against the inside of the holster's belt loop slots, causing them to push out slightly. This causes a bit of printing from the outer wings of the holster if the cover garment is snug, however the printing is more ambiguous since its not the gun itself that's printing.

I still use it occasionally if using OWB, and show it to my clients as one method of routing the belt thru their holster for a snugger fit, with the above caveat of causing the holster 'ears' sticking out.

hadn't thought about the "ears poking out" on pancake/slide holsters, but ...some "under belt OWB" holsters are made so they "could" go that way i think if belt loop spacing permits

RETENTION
. none of those are Level 2 or level 3 etc retention for Open carry ...... and so ... I might still go IWB & get the one with the trigger guard catch and just pull up the shirt to open carry IWB with minimum twist-draw retention level 2... (trigger guard plus friction)
