CHL Demographics by Zip Code

#1

Post by Vol Texan »

Is there a way to find the breakdown of CHL holders by zip code?

Looking at the DPS website, I can see how many licenses were issued each year per zip code, but I'm looking for a total number of CHL holders per zip code instead. Further breakdowns by age group and gender would also be helpful.

Thanks much for anyone who can point me in the right direction.

thanks for your note. I do see those reports, would show how many licenses are issued per year, but that doesn't tell me how many active license holders are in any given ZIP Code this year.

might take a little legwork but looks like if you subtract the revokes and suspended from the applications that should give you a mean count of active holders per zip, then add all together

ETA: lots of legwork to do for all years

As much as I'd like to see it too, DPS does not provide that information. It's a shame they don't. I believe they should.

They only provide statewide totals for active CHL's & instructors.

I respectfully disagree. I think the less they make public, the better. Statewide totals are fine, but I don't think they should break it down further.

I think that may be the DPS's reasoning as well, and I certainly cannot find fault in that.

Maybe I'm not understanding the question! If I go to the link above and scroll down a little I find this" CHL Reports sorted by Zip Code:" It is a big list and it only shows by zip code. Isn't that what you asked for?

He needs total CHL issued and still active per zip code since 1995.

That list you are looking at only lists new license holders issued CHL's that year for that particular zip code. It does not give total population of active license holders by zip code.

How very odd it is to see how many zip codes have 1-2 CHL holders. And I was surprised to learn that there are only around 500 in my own zip code as the population is fairly high for this zip code, and yet is is half what it was in my last zip code which has approximately the same population. And was also surprised to see that there are several TX CHL holders in my former zip code from another state. Interesting stats!
