CONYERS, Ga. --A 9-year-old boy was accidentally shot in the stomach by his mother while she was trying to load a gun.

Johnny Andrews was shot early Saturday while his mother's boyfriend was showing her how to use a .45-caliber handgun when two shots went off, one hitting the boy in the abdomen, the Rockdale County Sheriff's Office said.

It appears the woman Carey Fitts, 30, was pulling the slide back to load the weapon while her finger was on the trigger, Sheriff's Cpl. Tom Brewer said.

"The trigger pull on those guns is real dainty," Brewer said. "It doesn't take much to pull the trigger. It looks like she pulled the slide back, and we surmise she had her finger on trigger, and when she wrapped the round, it popped off. You can shoot a round really quick on those guns."

Brewer said two other children, ages 4 and 10 months, were in the apartment at the time.

The boy was brought to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Fitts was named in a warrant charging her with reckless conduct, a misdemeanor, but had not turned herself in as of Monday afternoon, Sheriff Jeff Wigington said.

I would think both the mother AND boyfriend would be charged. They are both equally responsible for that poor kid.

I read this before bed last night and told my wife that my 10 year old would know better. The guy "teaching" her was a complete moron and should suffer the legal consequences and has proven too stupid to be allowed to own a firearm. I hope the kid lives and doesn't have too many health problems the rest of his life as a result of the stupidity of his mother and her idiot boyfriend.

As for my son, I got up this morning and said to him, "I read a story last night about a lady who shot her 9-year-old in the stomach, accidentally, while racking the slide on a .45. Why do you think this happened?" He holds up his hands and makes the motion like a finger on the trigger and left hand racking the slide and says, "The idiot had her finger pulled on the trigger and boom boom the gun goes off! What a moron! What was she doing pointing the gun at the kid in the first place?"

The wife starts laughing and looks at me and said, "You were right!"

Pretty sad when a 10-year old knows gun safety better than an adult. Certainly makes me glad that I taught him properly and he actually listened for a change. LOL!

Ten-year-old knows b/c he was taught. It's too bad these two were not taught how to handle a gun.

The most dangerous people are often those who think they know safety. I don't place a lot of blame on the the Mom. She simply didn't know better. Her "boyfriend" caused this accident by teaching when he was unqualified. She as the student couldn't be expexted to know the "rules". He should have told her the rules before she was allowed to touch the gun.

You can almost always count on a kid to listen to you when you talk about guns. I don't know a 10 year old (or younger) boy that DOESN'T think guns are cool.

It's a win-win, you wanna teach and they'll always wanna learn :)

Although I feel everyone is responsible for their actions. I blame the boyfriend for this. He should have ensured the saftey of everyone while "teaching" someone unfamiliar with guns.

With a pistol it is easy for the inexperienced to sweep the barrel accross someone without realizing it . (unless of coarse they happen to shoot that someone, then it is obvious)
