I agree. As someone who served almost 21 years in the USAF, I am proud to be a veteran. I did my job and I believe did it well, but I am certainly no hero.

And to reply to a different poster, Donald Trump is running as a Republican, not as a "third-party candidate". And, for the record, I am not "backing" Trump, I am just happy he has forced the issue of the illegal alien invasion of our country into the spotlight. There are a few candidates I like at this point, and that will narrow down for me as the time gets closer; there is over a year left, you know.
I don't know you personally but you are a hero. I was active duty 8 years. We served. My friend and I signed up at the same time. He went to Cambodia, I went to a stateside base. No rhyme or reason. Any of us could have been killed or ordered into combat. Don't downgrade yourself because you didn't get shot. Trump didn't do the service. Obama didn't do the service. Clinton didn't do the service. McCain got shot down and was a POW and is a hero. You don't have to run through landmines to be a hero. None of us knows when we are in the service what will happen to us because we serve our country and we may die for our country. Trump and the phony politicians don't have any right to become Commander in Chief without serving first, at least that's my opinion.

I completely agree with where you're coming from.

We use hero so often now it's been completely watered down and lost almost all meaning. Anybody in the military is a hero. All cops are heroes. Teachers are heroes. Homosexuals that come out publicly are heroes. Any kid that wins (or loses) a Little League ball game is a hero.

While I can understand the sentiment, but I think real Heroism takes a deliberate act of self sacrifice to save others. Audi Murphy is a Hero. Richard Winters is a Hero. Chris Kyle is a Hero. I think McCain is a step below those guys but that's just my opinion and I don't mean to discredit his service.

That said, a draft dodger like trump has no right to judge McCain ever.

Agreed about the clown show but not sure what is meant by "our rights further stripped away". I see that mentioned on the forum and elsewhere every once in a while so I'm wondering what rights I'm losing. :confused5 It seems like gays have more rights, the poor have better health care, some illegals are still doing better, and the market is up. I'm not saying everything is rosy but at least we don't have Greece's problems (debt vs GDP-wise). Please enlighten me.

OK. Be glad to. In the 1920's you could buy a machinegun from a catalog, no questions asked. Now you have to fill out a bunch of forms, undergo an extensive background check and pay prohibitive taxes (all fees are really taxes) for the "right" to own one. Today, you can't legally dig a pond in your backyard without the government's permission. You can't buy a new toilet, a refrigerator, a washer or dryer, a car, and many other things without first having gotten the government's approval. There are thousands and thousands of laws and regulations that can trip you up and cost you your life savings and your freedom. Now, some politicians are trying to make speaking ill of favored groups a federal crime.

I could go on and on for hours, but if you really think you are as free as your ancestors were, maybe you need to pay closer attention to what's going on around you.

Kerry served, so he can say and do what he wants and should never be ridiculed? If not, then neither can McCain. Everyone that served honorably should be appreciated for their service. It ain't no ticket to impunity.

Gee thanks, now I feel terrible too. But if I had lived in the 20's I would have enjoyed getting my beer more than my machine gun which you mentioned first, apparently as most important. Remember prohibition? Remember Jim Crow laws?

Some of the regulations you resent conserve, keep us safer, set standards, and actually save us money in the long run. People that put cost over safety frequently end us costing us more in the long run.

In general, I'll gladly take the 2010s over the 1920s. Oh wait, now I feel better.

All those things you mention are nice, but they come at a steep cost - government control. What makes you think the marketplace wouldn't have come up with more efficient machines without government interference? What makes you think people wouldn't conserve without the government forcing them to? The problem you have is almost universal these days. You can't imagine doing "right" without the government mandating it. But that's not freedom. I wore a seatbelt before it was forced on us, because it made sense to do it. It still makes sense to do it, but now you can be arrested for not doing it.

You, like so many Americans these days, don't understand what freedom is.

I'm tired of the name calling and dragging up the past. Tough times are ahead and they won't be fixed with constant play of the POW card, the woman card, the hero card or the race card.

McCain has had a long streak of political luck of a sort, especially surviving as one of the Keating Five and AZ rapidly becoming a blue state. Bomb-Iran-bomb Iran, jokes about 18 yr old Chelsea Clinton's looks...

I do think Trump is on to something with his suggestion of an IQ test for some of these candidates.

But the one that really takes the cake on the other side is John Kerry. Having lived through his wartime antics, and follow ons as an anti war hero - I cannot believe he is surviving politically.

If Trump stays in as an independent and throw in a couple of other votes for Paul...Hillary is the winner with 38 percent of the votes from the usual crowd of intellectuals and something for nothing folks.

And what is with calling everyone a 'hero' ? Somebody should look it up in the dictionary.
You may have the last word.

Sure glad to, Obi Juan, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... ernal_debt" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Sorry our debt is worse than you thought, but you asked...

By the way, Greek unemployment rate is greater than 25% - I suspect Baldeagle would prefer the 30s (as well as the 20s) when our unemployment rate was like that. At least there was much greater freedom to starve. Go see "Grapes of Wrath" to get cheered up.

Here you go. Check this out and let me know how much longer we can sustain our country at this rate. The debt is bad but the unfunded liabilities is what is going to sink us.

I believe Greece's debt is 170 percent of GDP. The US debt is only 107 percent of GDP. So see we are in really great shape. /s
