I found this on line, and thought I would share it, This is from a High School paper in Frisco, Texas. Thought it might be worth sharing.

He does a pretty darn good job for a high school student.
Although he does a better job than most of the reporters I have recently read, he does need improve his fact checking.

Yeah I think his numbers may be somewhat skewed, but if you click on the related link just to the right of this column, you will see an opposing view by two other students, who will definitely need more time in English class, along with the fact that they almost totally discredit their own story.

I see they had to have the opposite view written to give a side by side. Maybe its my point of view with having a CHL but this one just sounds silly.

Yeah I think their point got lost or edited out somewhere. They seemed to just throw together sentences, without making a point. But at least there are kids actually trying to perfect their craft, and I wish them luck. Maybe as they move forward and take a little more time to check facts, their opinions will change.

Yes I do wonder if this was the type of article that they were forced to write as part of a class. It could not really reflect their opinion at all.

Could be. They may have been assigned to write opposing views on a current event topic.

I wasn't talking about the numbers. Most of the articles and posts where people references statistics make me yawn. People use numbers and so-called statistics to support their arguments, but most have no idea how to analyze data.
For example, the comparison between the number of people killed by terrorists is totally irrelevant to deaths by firearms. Of course this argument isn't limited to high school newspapers and it all too common in the national media.

This is the statement that caught my attention.

I noted that the original article was written by a "guest contributor" and the opposing view was written by two editors of the newspaper.
That is two against one. They are ganging up and bullying Mr. Grubbs. That isn't fair.

Seriously, I am very happy that the topic was published and allowed some debate about the issues.

Jarods opinion (for) was much better written IMO than Henry & Sarahs (against). The numbers for each could have been better researched but, as stated by WildBill, most people cannot interpret it correctly anyway. There is the possibility that the argument was weak because Henry & Sarahs hearts simply weren't in it.

Considering that all three writers are high school students, pretty good job. They are young people still learning and honing their skills.

Back in prehistoric times we had something called DEKA. A debate club where you had to argue either side depending on which you were assigned. A really fun learning experience that taught you to see opposing views and opened your field of vision. Probably something akin to a lawyer.
