Strange new Walmart ammo policy attributed to Open Carry

So, I stopped at a small town Walmart yesterday and checked the ammo counter. To my surprise they had 22 LR (M22 in 1,000 round boxes for $50) and 22 mag, and I bought some. The register at the ammo counter was closed so the guy there said he'd take it to customer service for me to check out.

After I pay, the customer service rep says because of the new law they have to walk my ammo purchase outside. So I said: you mean the law allowing open carry that went into effect at the first of the year? The answer: yes. So, the rep walked me outside then handed me the ammo. I didn't buy any handgun ammo....some 7.62x51 and the 22, which, when asked, I said was for rifles.

I suspect this is not a corporate policy but a policy of this specific store. Anyone else run into this? It didn't bother me, though it doesn't make much sense.

IDK about policy and store vs. corporate, but if they have .22 at reasonable prices I'll be fine with an escort to the door...

I've pretty much limited my ammo purchases to bulk online.

It's cheaper and less hassle.

I used to buy my ammo at Walmart and next time I go, I'll ask if they have a new policy of walking you out to the parking lot.

I do know they had that policy in effect when I bought my Colt AR's from them.

This policy makes perfect sense. If you were a bad guy intent on causing harm, once they've walked you past the carts and out both sets of electronic doors, how would you get back in?

I just don't like reporting my purchases to the NSA so I don't buy online or buy in a store using a credit card.

I can tell you a few things:

1) It's not corporate policy, or at least not enforced at a corporate level (evenly).
2) The Walmart near my house has done that on and off for years, with no consistency, so at least at my local store it has nothing to do with Open Carry.
3) The Walmart in Hillsboro, Texas, has never done that, including last weekend when I was down there.

It was a first time ever at any Walmart for me and I've bought ammo at Walmarts all over the state.

Doesn't seem that illogical to me. Sure, a kid could order ammo online but he can't shoot it unless he's got access to a gun. However, a kid could order wine online and drink it once it was delivered.

I only had this happen at Academy when buying firearms. The last time i bought one they said they stopped doing that.

Just in Walmart a few days ago in Garland and bought .380, 9mm and 45 cal paid for it at that counter and walked out with no issues. That lady was really confused on the new law.

I know Academy walks the gun to the cashier when you by a gun. Don't know about ammo purchases. It's lame regardless. Maybe they want to make sure you walk in front of the cameras.

I've heard of past policies of employees walking you out when you purchase a firearm, and not allowing you to buy ammo at the same time. I don't know first hand; I've never bought a firearm from Wal-Mart.
