I don't think it is necessary to ask Paxton to delay opinions about SB 11/SB 273. He seems to be doing that without being asked.

AUSTIN - Attorney General Ken Paxton should wait to issue an opinion on how to interpret Texas' new campus carry law until after the entire process is complete, a state senator said Thursday.
Entire process is complete? Must be something explained in the full article. I thought the process was complete - bill drafted, presented to the legislature, voted, signed. You know, passed into law. Is there some other full process?

I don't think Paxton is delaying anything. It does take time to research all the relevant law, and this certainly not the only thing on the plates of the AG staff.

The article notes: "Attorneys general usually issue opinions within 180 days of the request,..."

On the other hand, I don't see why it's problem if the AG weighs in earlier to give everyone some guidance, rather than "after the process is complete". I suspect Senator Kirk Watson, who asked for the delay, is hoping to delay guns on campus as long as possible, and let the most restrictive rules possible get entrenched as long as possible.

Btw, if you want to see the whole article without signing up for the HouChron, search for it on Google and look for the cached version.

The legislature gave public colleges 1.25 years to get ready for this. No more delays.
Not much to interpret - concealed carry will/shall be legal on most parts of campus, only real exceptions being some labs with chemicals and possible sporting events.

The process being referred to is the process by which public universities can designate certain areas as off limits for concealed carry. There are several current threads running that discuss the particulars regarding sb11's implementation at different universities.

Yes, have been following those threads. But apparently I'm still confused then. Why should the AG wait to issue his opinion about application of the new law. Wouldn't that opinion be presumed to help the universities understand what they can and cannot do?

The request to wait was made by one of the bill's opponents. The bill's author had already asked the AG's office for clarification so that universities don't stall by enacting overly restrictive measures that will takes months to correct.

Hopefully, Paxton will help the non-independent thinkers, who will be trying to manipulate their understanding of the law, with an official opinion. Sooner than later.

They were given time to comply. Give them an inch and they will take a mile.
