S = Syria or al Sham
L = Levant

It's the same group and you can use either one depending how much you want to overstate their control.

I've seen him before........

I thought the British media identified him a week or so after the first beheading.

I hope whatever group finds him cuts his head off and smears pig blood and entrails over him.

ISIS and ISIL are the same organization. When they broke away from Al Qaeda in Iraq, they were simply the Islamic State. As their presence in Syria grew they renamed themselves ISIS, Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham(translated by some as Syria). al-Sham encompasses a much greater area than just Syria. So the Obama Administration trying to clarify the "al-Sham", decided that in English the Arabic term would be ISIL, Islamic State in Iraq and The Levant.
The Levant(archaic English term meaning east of Rome) includes the entire eastern Mediterranean littoral between Turkish Anatolia and Egypt. Or what we know today as:
Cyprus, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, West Bank and Gaza, Syria, and part of southern Turkey.
Such is the ambition of the group. There is also another term getting some mileage, Da'esh. Da'esh is the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

ISIS = Islamic State in Syria
ISIL= Islamic State in Levant, i.e., the area around and including Israel.
