I had purchased them in Colorado and brought them with me to New Jersey, home to some of the harshest gun laws in the country, where I moved to be closer to my young son. I complied with all of the regulations, but one day the police searched my car and charged me with unlawful possession of a weapon—even though my handguns were locked, unloaded, and in my trunk. The court said it was on me to prove that I wasn’t breaking any laws, which obviously was very difficult."

We lived in NJ. It always amazed me that there were plenty of LE resources out rounding up otherwise upstanding citizens for a range of "offenses" It is illegal in NJ, for example, for you to have an unrestrained dog in your car. It is $1,000 fine. Meanwhile, Newark, Camden and many other cities are cesspools of crime that are largely ignored. This is NOT a LE issue. It is a political issue. Corrupt politicians run every one of those cities and, like Chicago and Detroit, the consequences are the same.

The legal system seems to delight in "making an example" of guys like Aitken, just to show how tough on crime they are. If the true bad guys were similarly punished, NJ would have run out of prison space long ago.

If Chris Christie was the Governor he claims to be, he would make all of the NJ anti-constitutional draconian gun laws go away. He won't.

If it's the same case I'm thinking of, he was covered under MPA, which trumped NJ law. NJ decided to ignore this, however, and prosecute him anyway.

And just to throw my $0.02 in, I regard Chris Christie as a more liberal version of Bill Richardson (who was at least somewhat pro-gun, albeit a corrupt good-ol'-boy), only wearing an R instead of a D, and expecting accolades for daring to do so. Given a choice between the two, I'll vote for the snake that admits it's a snake, instead of the one pretending to be a bird.

Chris Christie will never get my vote. He is a larger version of Hillary. Nope nope nope. Why should I be tarred with having voted for progressive light. If the dum dums in the GOP put him up they had better find a new base.

That said what happened to this man is reprehensible. If I were his friend I would tell him to be absolved of any personal guilt and to understand he was a political prisoner in a tyrannical state.

I actually wrote to Gov. Christie about this case, when he commuted Aitken's sentence. I asked why he had commuted it instead of pardoning him, exactly because commutation leaves his conviction intact and pardon expunges it. I got a letter back a few weeks later. . . . I have it around here somewhere. . . .in which Christie gave a totally unsatisfactory answer, stating that he thought he did the just thing.

At the time, Christie was just becoming a rising young star in national republican politics. That letter convinced me that I would never, under ANY circumstances, vote for the running dog.

I've been a vocal proponent of the notion that "you vote your conscience in the primary and for the guy (or gal) with an actual, realistic chance to win, who is closest to your corner in the GE"....But I'm not sure I could vote for Christie in the GE... It would certainly be testing my limits.

I feel sorry for him, but the laws there are really scary for anyone with firearms, unless they are criminals. The same goes for a large part of the northeast where large cities are concerned.
