But yeah, there's a "war on drugs" that requires assaults on the Constitution, SWAT raids on innocent people, and dog killing.
They’re not allowed to actually step foot in Sartok’s many acres of poppy fields or damage the fields in any way.
They can’t even threaten to destroy the fields or send in Afghan troops to burn, plow under or poison the delicate, pastel-colored flowers.
Nor can they discourage poppy farmers, however gently, from growing their illicit crop, which is hardier and commands a higher price than alternatives such as wheat. Poppy cultivation has been illegal in Afghanistan since 2001 but still represents a full quarter of the country’s gross domestic product and a major source of revenue for the Taliban, to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. Many of the middlemen who buy up raw poppy paste for onward sale to heroin-producers hail from the insurgent group.

I have thought the same thing for a long time. Without its high priced real estate in NY and the US to fund it, the UN would fall apart. I'm flabbergasted at how much money we send to countries and organizations that hate us, including the UN.

That has been the sentiment of some for a long time. I remember seeing "US out of UN; UN out of US" bumper stickers and billboards way back in high school days....some 40 years ago. Not much progress in that direction.

Or... We can legalize, grow it domestically, regulate it and take all that cash out of the pockets of those who would prefer to see us dead.
........ because the war on drugs has produced such magnificent results to date.
