Disabled Vietnam Veteran, award winning author and contributor to Freedom Outpost Leon Puissegur was turned down for the purchase of a weapon he was going to use for hog hunting by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS). The peculiar thing about the denial was that it was based on an incident that never happened, but since the denial more fabricated charges have come up in the NICS system against Mr. Puissegur. If you are considering supporting stricter background checks, I suggest you read the problems these can cause for law abiding citizens, including veterans.
Once you have to ask the government for permission to own a firearm, you are at their mercy.

Been there done that. One of the most humiliating moments in my life. Can't get a more spotless record than mine and I have been denied once. The FFL treated me like a criminal after he hung up the phone. I think he actually put his hand on his gun until I left.
To say it is a flawed system is being kind. Just think if they did prosecute people who were denied. I could see it now, cops show up and haul me away in cuffs. Then I have to report that on my CHL app!
I'm not angry about it anymore. no, really. I'm not.

That is our future if the "compromise" background check bill is passed. I can only imagine the numbers of people who will enter enter sloppy or downright false information. We need to protect the gun rights of our veterans and everyone else who isn't a clear and certain danger to others and put in place a good system for addressing grievances. The current system is not very good as it is. Expanding it dramatically can only lead to massive problems and loss of gun rights for innocent people.

And here lies a HUGE problem no one is addressing. IF this monstrosity of a bill passes, there will be an ENORMOUS bow wave of data that will have to be entered an little time to do so. So .gov will hire a contractor to do all that additional data entry. Since it will be done on a short schedule, they'll hire people off park benches and, in order to 'get the data entered' any proof reading or fact checking will just be skipped or forgotten.

Oh, and with all these folks hired on the 'quick and cheap', and then giving them access to mounds of personal data, you don't think there would be the possibility of identity theft now would you?

And for those who deny it could happen, I refer you to the annals of the breakup of the Bell System, when companies that used shared databases found out that they would not have that data available after the "cut." They hired temps to input the data off of paper printouts of data already in the systems, into the systems, and there was no proofreading, and the new databases were inviolate and could not be corrected without a formal and complicated procedure that they never allowed anyone to know was there. Just because it happened 30 years ago, doesn't mean it can't or won't again. And some of those "transscriptionists" did indeed make and keep personal copies that got sold to the highest bidders.

Having just gone through the Social Security Administration for the mandatory registration for Medicare, I can tell you that they not only don't get the data right most of the time, they don't even have a clue about how to correct their problems. I had to call my House member's office and ask for his help to get my Medicare registration problem fixed.

The new background check system would end up exactly the same way. No way, in our wildest dreams should we ever imagine that only the BG will be denied gun purchases.

The only fair system for taking away a right like this is adjudication with the respective government agency picking up the tab for all legal fees of the defense if the court rules in favor of the defendant.

Only the GGs are going to be denied and that is the intent of the checks. If it wasn't there would be a long history of prosecutions of BG's who attempted to buy guns.

Yes! The sad thing is the families who were used by Obama as emotional fodder now feel even worse. I am sorry for them, but I am not sorry for the dozens of calls and letters I wrote.

If you are rejected by NICS, does the FFL tell you why? If not, what is the process for finding out why? Is there an appeals process? It's never happened to me (yet) but I have worked around computers and IT guysfor a while and seenu now how easy data errors are to make and how hard they can be to find.

Easier to get your CHL and tell NICS to take a long walk off a short pier.
