If true, could be a bill buster. Part of the article here:
Speaker sends important gun bills to D-chaired committee
February 18, 2013 | Blog, Featured
Today, the Speaker dealt a significant blow to two important conservative gun bills when he referred them to a committee chaired by a Democrat.
One of them, a campus carry bill, could have easily been sent to the Republican-chaired Higher Ed Committee. This bill, HB 706, was co-authored by Reps. Capriglione, Leach, Klick, and Laubenberg.
Instead, it was referred along with Rep. Lavender’s HB 700 – a bill to legalize open carry in Texas – to the House Committee on Security and Public Safety, chaired by El Paso Democrat Joe Pickett.

Charles L. Cotton had some concerns about this, which he posted in another thread a week or so ago, and I posted one like it as well, a day or two before that. But I also recall that the democrat head of that committee, Joe Pickett (I think???), its also A-Rated by the NRA. We'll see, won't we?

Joe Strauss maintains his speakership due to the votes of Democrats. This Chair assignment is a "safe" gesture of appreciation for that support past, and FUTURE.

The author of this article doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. He suggests that Speaker Straus should have sent the campus carry bill to the Republican-chaired Higher Education committee; however, the Republican who chairs the Higher Education committee is a longtime opponent of campus carry (possibly the most vocally opposed Republican in the Texas House). Although the Democratic chair of the Homeland Security & Public Safety committee has never openly supported campus carry, he is also not on the record as opposing it. Campus carry proponents might have a legitimate complaint about Speaker Straus's choice of committee chairs, but they have no legitimate complaint about which committee received the current crop of campus carry bills.
The House Homeland Security & Public Safety committee includes Rep. Allen Fletcher (the committee vice chair) and Rep. Tim Kleinschmidt, both of whom filed their own campus carry bills. It also includes Rep. George Lavender, the author of the open carry bill. As far as I can tell, not one member of the House Higher Education committee has even signed on as a coauthor of a campus carry or open carry bill. Only three of the nine members of the Higher Education committee have "A" ratings from the NRA. Eight of the nine members of the Homeland Security & Public Safety committee have "A" ratings from the NRA. Clearly, the author of the original article failed to do even the most rudimentary analysis of these two committees.
Straus gave the campus carry bills to the same committee that always gets them, and they'll get a committee hearing, just like they always do. Most likely, the hearing will come later than necessary, as it usually does, and if the bills come out of the Calendars committee at all, they'll most likely come out too late to receive a floor vote (or too late to make their way to the Senate). THAT is how Straus uses his influence to kill bills, not by sending them to Democrat-chaired committees. Focusing on party affiliation demonstrates ignorance of Texas politics--gun-rights votes typically do not fall along strict party lines in the Texas Legislature.

We knew this after 2009. We knew this after 2011. But his fellow Democrat-wannabes and the open Democrats keep electing him Speaker so he can keep pushing their agendas. .
Anyone who voted for a legislator in 2012 that voted for Straus as speaker for 2011 and 2013 should count themselves as part of the problem because they knew.

Yeah, that's how it works.

I disagree, Joe Straus is a Democrat. I can call myself a Conservative all day long but if my actions always fall in line with the liberal agenda, what am I? Actions speak louder than the "R" next to his name. He might have a good rating with the TSRA and NRA but in my opinion, Republican he is not. Friend of gun rights? Maybe...

I often wonder if some of our *republican*/*conservative* legislators allow this to happen, so they can take cover in the actions of others...in that what they claim to defend actually what is the true desire of their own hearts......
How else do we allow these libs to run these committees/panels that wield so much power? No, really!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Charles, can you shed light on my ignorance? Help me understand what I imagine?

Who was it that said elections have consequences? It looks like we got a double whammy in Austin and DC.

Anyone seen this?
Baylor Anti-Campus Carry Letter
Baylor University in Waco, a private college, has professors trying to stop Campus Carry.
So much for having an open mind for a free flow of ideas!

I haven't see the details of this session's bill but the one in 2011 would have allowed private colleges and universities to make their own decisions about campus carry.
This isn't surprising and it goes deeper than Baylor University. All of the Baylor Healthcare facilities that I've ever seen are 30.06 posted. It is a systemic "problem" if you believe in the 2nd Amendment. What would be interesting to know is how many of the doctors and staff that work in all of those buildings have been exempted from the 30.06 posting. I'm guessing that the top level administrators and many of the chiefs of staff carry handguns. This is a ruling class thing.

I wasn't aware there is an exemption for 30.06 signs.
You made me look, does this part allow for carrying where a 30.06 is posted?
(1) carries a handgun under the authority of Subchapter H, Chapter 411, Government Code, on property of another without effective consent; and
(2) received notice that:
(A) entry on the property by a license holder with a concealed handgun was forbidden
So with "effective consent" you can actually carry?
