Read in the paper yesterday the GAO (investigative arm of congress) recently conducted a study of active concealed weapons permits by state as of 12/31/2011. Texas was in the top five along with Florida, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Indiana.

That's the part that really bothers me. Why do the taxpayers of say.....California need to know how many CHL holders Texas has......since they helped to pay for it? I sincerely hope that the study consisted of no more than a phone call to each governor.

It shouldn't have cost more than the salary of one clerical worker for one morning.......but I'll bet it didn't.

There is or was a bill in congress to mandate CHL reciprocity from Washington DC.
Sounds like this study would have been more relevant than most of the studies I read about on the internet.

Don't assume that there is something sinister going on. There might be, but don't assume such. It might have something to do with the fees the feds charge to do the FBI check, The number of licenses per state checking out audit-wise with the revenue generated for the background checks might be an issue. Most federal agencies are supposed to provide optional services at no actual cost to the tax payer. Example: if a radio amateur requests a 'vanity' callsign, he has to pay a fee which has been calculated to cover the actual manpower costs of researching and issuing the license. Or, it might be a sinister action on the part of the feds.

Perhaps the information helps the democrat congressional and senate re-election committees decide where and how to commit election resources. Maybe even Obama will pay attention to those numbers. Otherwise, not much obvious use for that information.

Can someone save me 90 pages of reading and tell me if the numbers in the OP are based on percent of population or just gross total number of permits?

really? per capita or total?????

More waste of our money. A simple certified letter to each state should have brought the answer to them.
