Austin, TX — As the current special session of the 82nd Texas Legislature heads into its second and possibly final week, Young Conservatives of Texas call upon Governor Rick Perry to add “campus carry” to the agenda. Tony McDonald, senior vice chairman of Young Conservatives of Texas and a law student at the University of Texas at Austin, commented, “By adding ‘sanctuary cities’ to the special session agenda, Governor Perry has shown that he intends to undo the damage done by a handful of liberal legislators who sought to stand in the way of the majority’s hard work. It only makes sense that he also add ‘campus carry,’ an issue that clearly has majority support in the Texas Legislature and that has a much longer history than ‘sanctuary cities’ of being blocked by parliamentary chicanery.”

I have already called the governors office to support campus carry but in my opinion it doesn't seem like there is much traction on the issue. It's been very quite whether he intends to add it to the agenda or not.

There seems to be alot of talk that the governor might be running for presidents. I wonder if this has anything to do with the silence. He says he supports campus carry but for me to really believe I need to see him add it to the special session. I would support him as a presidential candidate then. We need a strong conservative who sticks to his guns(no pun intended) Instead of one who just plays to the politics of the day.

I think it is a sign he has higher aspirations. Something like campus carry would be close to a third rail issue down the line if he runs for President. If that is the case (it's only my opinion that it is) I would have a hard time giving him any support regardless of how he stands on other issues or that I probably wouldn't anyways. I see it as a lack of backbone and playing politics in the worst way.

After the VA Tech shooting and after the 2009 session had ended, Perry made a statement to the effect that we should be able to carry anywhere.

Due to the timing, I wondered then if he really supported the idea or if it was to garner political capital.

He hasn't done anything this session to back up his statement.

On the other hand, considering what's on the agenda, if he doesn't add campus carry, why should American gun owners vote for him?

Not only has he not added campus carry to the special session, he still hasn’t signed SB 321, the Employee Protection Act. I'm thinking he's worried these issues won’t play as well on a national stage...

If I understand correctly the bill will become law as long as he does not veto it regardless of if he signs it.

Either way, not signing it would separate his name from the bill... I personally doubt he would do that, but it would fit in with all the news that's coming out about him lately.

I may simply be overlooking it, but I have not found much discussion by the members of this forum regarding the possibility of Campus Carry being included in the Special Session.

Is this now considered a dead-horse issue? Did the bill step in the proverbial pile?

I am wondering the same thing. Maybe I am missing something but is there something that restricts it from being added. It's just my thoughts but if Perry is considering a presidential run he's going to not want to address "controversial issues" to be able to get undecided independent voters on his side. i would feel better if he would handle this now. As much as i hate it sometimes you need to play the game to get your foot in the door.

No, there's nothing restricting Gov. Perry from adding it to the session if he chooses to.

I doubt the Presidential run would stop him from dealling with "controversial issues"...He is the one that was pushing for the sonogram before and abortion bill. I think that was pretty controversial

I certainly hope your right about this my friend. We need someone in charge that is willing to tackle the "unpopular" issues

Because he'd be better than 4 more years of Obama, name the issue?

Look, I'd rather Perry push for campus carry too. But even if he doesn't, the fact remains that he is generally pro-gun, and he will make a generally pro-gun president if elected. I'm not saying he is the best candidate, and I haven't made up my mind yet whom I would vote for in the primary. Even so, if he turns out to be the republican candidate in the general election, he will automatically have my vote. The alternative is 4 more years of Obama. If that's what you would be happy with, then fine, vote for Obama. But if you are truly dedicated to getting him removed from office, you'll vote for a strong republican candidate, regardless of who that is. When Reagan ran for his first term, his big question was, "Are you better off today than you were before?" The answer, after 4 years of Carter, was a resounding "NO!" Reagan took 489 electoral college votes to Carter's 49. It was a wipeout.

Now, I remember Reagan fondly. But lest we color our lenses with too much rose, Governor Ronald Reagan of California signed the Mulford Act in 1967, "prohibiting the carrying of firearms on one's person or in a vehicle, in any public place or on any public street." The law was aimed at stopping the Black Panthers, but affected all gun owners. (SOURCE) Twenty-four years later, Reagan was still pushing gun control. "I support the Brady Bill," he said in a March 28, 1991 speech, "and I urge the Congress to enact it without further delay."

But even with his poor record on gun rights, I would vote for Reagan over Obama at the drop of a hat. I would vote for Mongo (with or without his candygram) over Obama. I would vote for the Humpback of Notre Dame over Obama. I would vote for Olive Oyle over Obama.........I think I've made my point.

So Rick Perry? Sure, I would vote for him over Obama no problem.

No campus carry in the special session means no vote for Perry in the primaries from me and most people I know.

In a choice between Obama and Perry yes. But that's not the choice we have in the primaries.
