New gun shop draws fire
I'll put this in the political section because this story has elements of (very) local politics. It seems like the suburban neighbors in Carrollton don't want a new gun shop near them.

FYI, this store is within 5-10 minutes of my office so I'm going to go there over the lunch hour to offer them my support. I will probably buy a box of .45 acp just on principal. I just hope I can avoid temptation to buy a new bangstick.

Re: New gun shop draws fire
Huh? Yeah, Texas is a lawless free fire zone. We see that by all the shootouts occurring on a daily basis.Council member Jeff Andonian started asking questions at Babick's behest.
First, he checked to see if the shop was breaking any laws by opening in the same mall as a liquor store.
"But obviously in Texas there are no rules," he said.

You have to be careful with those firearms. I hear the HKs throw one heck of an Oktoberfest while the people are away. You wouldn't want them growing legs and walking over to the liquor store in such a state!Kythas wrote:Huh? Yeah, Texas is a lawless free fire zone. Re: New gun shop draws fire
Hmm. I guess I need to get out more. This shop is a mile from my house. I drive by it every day on my way home from work and I didn't even know it was there. I'll drop by tonight and check it out and then plan to go to the City Council meeting on Tuesday and support these guys.
Hurray! We now have a gun shop on our side of town. Now if we just had a range.......

Re: New gun shop draws fire
I just got back from my first, and certainly not last, visit to Big Slim's Firearms. I spoke with both Corey and Jack at length. You can't find two nicer guys to talk to in the world. They actually are thankful for the media coverage and admit that they couldn't have bought anything nearly as effective as the free advertising that they've received. There were a few other supporters in the store when I was there, with a steady flow in and out.
I bought a couple of boxes of .45 acp today. Oh, and at one point I told them "thank goodness you don't have any Kimbers in the cases or I'd be in trouble. Corey said they will stock Kimbers but that they were delayed because they have to order directly through Kimber and not their distributor. He said to check back in a couple of weeks. DAMN him, this is going to get expensive!!!

Re: New gun shop draws fire
The HOA president makes it sound like there's going to be a Bagdad style party in the parking lot with everyone pulling out their AR's and AK's and shooting at the clouds. "How could this happen just feet from our homes?"
I hope the locals give this shop lots of business. It sounds like he might have to lawyer-up to fight these guys off. Next time I'm traveling I-35 through Carrollton, I might just have to make a stop and buy something. You can always call on your U.S. Rep Kenny Marchant. I've known Kenny for years...even before he was mayor of Carrollton way back when. He might consider coming to the aid of the gun shop. Couldn't hurt anything!!

Re: New gun shop draws fire
The kind of thinking done by this HOA guy just gets my brain to itching. If this guy is going to get his panties in a bunch over an inantimate object the least he can do is be intellectually honest. If he's not honest then its just a personal prejudice or grab for power or press. Just looking around from the parking lot you will see a liqour store and a gas station that has tons of neon beer signs in the windows. Let's be honest and find out how many alcohol-fueled deaths (car wrecks, alcohol poisoning, etc.) they had in Carrollton (or Texas) last year. I'd wager that number is many hundreds of percentage points higher than the firearm caused deaths in those same areas. You would also see a few fast food restaurants. Do the same math on fatal heart attacks suffered by obese people. I'm sure the numbers would far surpass that of firearm caused deaths.pdubyoo wrote:The HOA president makes it sound like there's going to be a Bagdad style party in the parking lot with everyone pulling out their AR's and AK's and shooting at the clouds. If we are going to assume a gun is bad just because it is a gun, then let's not stop there. We should get rid of all bad "things" using that same insane logic. Can't have gasoline because that powers cars and we all know that cars "cause" over 50,000 deaths year after year after year. The same could be argued for car tires. Thase nasty cars couldn't have killed all those people of there were no tires to drive on. Maybe we should just have people go through a 10 hour course, show their proficiency, be finger printed and pass a background check before they are granted a driver's license. Given that they would be operating an inherently dangerous "thing" its the least we could do to protect ourselves.

Re: New gun shop draws fire
Even though I did live in Garland, Dallas, and Irving for about 9 years all together, I guess I'm just naive from growing up and living most of my life in more rural areas. I'm usually a little amused by all the people on this forum so bent on keeping their guns and CHL status a secret.
It's just mind-blowing to me that a community in Texas would have any kind of organized resistance to the opening of a gun store.

Re: New gun shop draws fire
Although I don't agree with the logic, I'm willing to bet that the shooting death across the street at DQ a few months ago will be brought up in Tuesday night's city council meeting as a reason to not have a gun store. I know....it makes no sense, but I'm willing to bet someone will bring it up. If I'm in town, I'll be at the city council meeting to see what goes down.
Re: New gun shop draws fire
Have you seen the numbers of drownings? They should be more worried about swimming pools in the neighborhood.

Re: New gun shop draws fire
Having hung around city council meetings, these arguments make me laugh because I've heard nearly all of them. People opposed to neighborhood swimming pools, alcohol sales at restaurants, alcohol sales for off-premises consumption, car parts stores because of a tendency for people to loiter around them, anything with a drive-thru because it doesn't look good, you name it.
Much better to focus on the actual facts than to try to make what seems like extreme examples to you but in the world of small town politics is likely to get a response of, "we don't want that here, either!"

If the DFW Metroplex is "small town", what does a city look like?Hoi Polloi wrote:Having hung around city council meetings, these arguments make me laugh because I've heard nearly all of them. I've been to them, too. They're even more dysfunctional!
