The Daily Show examines open carry
I watch The Daily Show on Comedy Central nightly. Find it's brand of politically-tinged humor very funny (though, admittedly, the host leans left). Last night, one of their segments tackled the open carry issue. Funny stuff, comparing the "struggle" for open carry rights to the struggle for gay/lesbian rights. And as usual was able to get across the viewpoint of both sides while being funny at the same time. Obviously, the folks who write & produce this show live and work in the northeast and are likely either anti or fence-sitters on the issue. But I thought Paul Helmke of Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence came across especially badly with this exchange:
Helmke: “I think anyone who is carrying a Colt .45 on their hip constantly, in public is not a normal human being.” (oh really? I wonder how many LEOs will take offense to that statement)
Wyatt Cenak: “So they’re an abomination to you.”
Helmke: “I’d feel a lot more comfortable if the gun owners and people that love their guns kept that behind closed doors.”
Anyway, some will obviously disagree and feel this is slanted against gun rights. But I found it humorous. Full clip of this segment at link below (including final scene of the "reporter" walking into a coffee shop with three handguns and an AR strapped to his body). And I do like that the pro-open carry guys come across as just average guys who happen to open carry, while Helmke comes across as a "bigot" so to speak.

I thought it was funny. Paints antis as the "intolerant people" they so loath.

I actually enjoyed that one. I think they set out to make gentle fun of open carry, but I also think that it backfired on them.

it got a few chuckles but over all not nearly as funny the time Colbert got a senator to claim the ten commandments where the foundation of American law, then in the next breathe got the man to admit he did not know all ten commandments

After watching this show (and the Colbert Report) off and on since it first aired on Comedy Central, I think you'd be hard pressed to prove that they actually have a political agenda on the show. John Stewart covers the left, and Stephen Colbert the right; more often than not they just poke fun at the prevailing political ideology of the time. The Annoyed Man wrote:I actually enjoyed that one. The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere. -Thomas Jefferson

And I don't know if this is a good thing or not, but both shows cover political issues with far more research and thought than MSNBC, Fox, ABC, etc do.

Gee, I wish we could come out of the closet here in Texas...(I even have the body type!).

Professional Training, Competition, Risk Avoidance, Situational Awareness, Tactical Mindset, 100,000+ rounds down range - the hardware is the least important part of the equation...

Yep. Pretty sad when the "fake news" is more correct factually than the "real news."PSLOwner wrote:And I don't know if this is a good thing or not, but both shows cover political issues with far more research and thought than MSNBC, Fox, ABC, etc do.

Re: The Daily Show examines open carry
While I don't watch those types of shows much, I found this segment pretty entertaining. Pretty obvious who is the paranoid party in that video. I'll give you a hint; he doesn't like guns.
Not to hijack the thread, but have you EVER seen a BG wearing his weapon openly in a holster?
I thought gangster SOP was to stuff in their knee high drawers.

That's one argument FOR open carry and AGAINST concealed carry. Good guys will always wear their guns in the open.CaptWoodrow10 wrote:While I don't watch those types of shows much, I found this segment pretty entertaining. I really enjoyed it too. It was comedy genius, actually. No matter how you feel about the issue, it's quite funny.

Yes it was. My wife watched it earlier and was laughing more than I did.

Re: The Daily Show examines open carry
I watched both shows daily, up until the Obama orgy in the run-up to the elections. I simply couldn't stomach it any longer. Both are certainly left-leaning, though I hope it's evened out since. I haven't checked back since the elections. It was certainly enough showing of true colors to turn me off to both of them pretty permanently.
