PRO GUN DEMOCRAT?
BOY HOWDY! The NY governor has appointed a 42 year young pro-gun lady democrat to take Mrs. Bill Clinton's seat in the Senate.
That has to be good news for us; however, it is reported that the governor's appointment fried Messrs. Bloomberg's and Schummer's shorts.

Foxnews referred to her as a blue dog democrat.

Both Clinton and the state’s senior senator, Charles Schumer, think highly of Gillibrand -- though they deny reports that they pushed her for the job.

Party politics has always been a more about personalities, favors and relationships more than ideologies. Thats Why we can have a leftist like McCain call himself a Republican.Captain Matt wrote:Where was that reported? I don't see what that has to do with asking someone to back up their statement that Schumer opposed Gillibrand.Liberty wrote:Party politics has always been a more about personalities, favors and relationships more than ideologies. I quoted reputable news sources showing Schumer supporting Gillibrand. I'm still waiting for him to quote sources.

Re: PRO GUN DEMOCRAT?
And the back story to Sen. Gilliland's appointment is that machine politics is alive and well in NY State. I should explain that I had the misfortune to grow up in and around Sen. Gilliland's former district and worked there as a phone man for many years. I even spent several years working the the state capitol, legislature, and various government offices there. I knew Sen. Gilliland's father, only slightly, and her grandmother, by reputation at least, quite well.Liberty wrote:Party politics has always been a more about personalities, favors and relationships more than ideologies. Sen. Gilliland's grandmother was Polly Noonan, who was the long time girlfriend of Mayor Erastus Conrning, and a political power in her own right within the Albany machine. Mayor Corning never lived in the city he was mayor of for just over 40 years and never was able to get the city to annex his home because it was on the other side of the Normanskill river, which was a natural boundary. Mayor Corning used Polly Noonan's address as his own to establish the residency necessary to be the mayor.
Political connections got her the position, that she is nominally pro gun in a district that has historically elected pro gun representatives, is a convenience and w have to hope that i is not too inconvenient.
BTW, if you want to see the absolute definition of "Gerrymander" take a look at the map of the 20th district in NY.
My letter to the Dallas Morning News today.
Interesting that Gov. Paterson chose to appoint Rep. Kirsten Gilllibrand as NY's new senator to fill a post that has traditionally been filled by a non New Yorker (Kennedy, Moynihan, Clinton, with a brief break, nine years, for Goodell and Buckley) maybe this signals a change in governmental policy for NY.
And of course Carolyn McCarthy will shrilly complain, she has been on a campaign to pass new anti-gun laws since her husband and son, among many others, were brutally attacked by a deranged criminal who CHOSE to violate numerous state and federal laws to conduct his attack.
Colin Ferguson's rampage would easily have been stopped if there had been one, just one, armed citizen there to take action. As it was, his attack was stopped when passengers finally jumped him as he paused to reload.
Texas' own Suzanna Gratia Hupp suffered a similar tragedy to McCarthy's, but she was there to witness the carnage, and she immediately recognized that all it would have taken to stop George Jo Hennard, who killed and injured more people than Ferguson, was just one armed citizen, which is part of the reason we have concealed carry in Texas now.
Bravo to Gov. Paterson, maybe Sen. Gilliland's appointment will balance the legislative scales a little, and maybe, just maybe, the McCarthyites will not pass their draconian anti-rights legislation, and common sense will rule.
Real gun control, carrying 24/7/365

Re: PRO GUN DEMOCRAT?
I have apparently drawn a false conclusion from an early morning pro-gun NY resident's blog on "My Yahoo News" and must recant my implication that Senator Schumer was less than happy with Gillibrand's appointment.
I ask that Senator Schumer's allies on this forum, and elsewhere, please accept my apologies.

Re: PRO GUN DEMOCRAT?
It was Carolyn McCarthy that threw a fit about her.
It was a wonderful, beautiful fit, too.

That bothers me, but I hope it's just a statemen to shut McCarthy up.
U.S. Representative Carolyn McCarthy was less than elated when discovering the news that former U.S. Representative, Kirsten Gillibrand, had been selected by Governor David Paterson to fill the Senate seat vacated by Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Governor Paterson stated Carolyn McCarthy even wasn't among the 10 to 20 the list of individuals who applied for the Senate appointment.
McCarthy, whose husband was killed and son wounded by a gunman on the in 1993, said Gillibrand's support of more conservative issues such as gun ownership rights was out of step with most New York Democrats.
She vowed to challenge Gillibrand herself in next year's primary or find a younger candidate to do so.
"I will certainly raise my voice and run if no one comes forward," McCarthy said in a telephone interview Friday. "Believe me, this is a personal issue for me. I don't think someone with a 100 percent NRA rating should be the next senator from NY."
During the news conference, Gillibrand complimented all of the state's female House delegation, offering an olive branch to McCarthy who she said has "provided outstanding leadership in fighting against gun violence and keeping our children safe. I pledge to work with her on her signature bill for updating background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals."
Near the end of her statement, Gillibrand again brought up the issue again, saying she would support gun control "but also protect our hunters' rights."

Re: PRO GUN DEMOCRAT?
I hate to say this but I don't think guns are really an important issue to ALL politicians, yo. So just because party members have opposite opinions on this issue doesn't mean that they won't support each other for the sake of the party.
Certainly guns are a top issue for many. Just not all.

Once in Washington, Kirsten Gilllibrand will fall into line with the liberal wing of the Democratic party and vote they way they want her to. Makes no difference if she has been mildly pro-gun in the past.

Re: PRO GUN DEMOCRAT?
Why do you think this? Democrats don't always follow follow the party line , but neither do Republicans. The right to keep and bear arms is not just a Republican issue. We need to keep in mind that it is also a civil rights issue which the left needs to adopt.fredtubbs wrote:Once in Washington, Kirsten Gilllibrand will fall into line with the liberal wing of the Democratic party and vote they way they want her to. While it's a sad turn of events, it is not a surprise - she's a yankee democrat. Look around you and at every level, the democrats will say and do anything to get a vote with a view of turning our nation into a one party government. The halt, the lame and the other misinformed folk who are expecting to be rewarded with government handouts will help them with their agenda by providing them votes in exchange for promises.apostate wrote:That didn't take long.

Re: PRO GUN DEMOCRAT?
She wants to let NYC keep its autonomy and enforce their own laws which seems to be their legal right. They are attempting to keep the illegal alien guns from Virginia from swimming across the southern river border. I think what she is asking for is to build a fence. with more armed border guards. Keeping out gun toting bible carrying rednecks can be accomplished if we really want to. The only real question is if we have the will. No more wet guns in NYC
