Thank you and your family for their service. I too have served as did my father and his father before him. I have 51 first cousins, Catholic family go figure, and since 7 October 2001, I have not had a member of my family not involved in Afghan or Iraqi operations. We've lost 1. 3 are disabled or still in hospital from wounds suffered in said operations.

While the upper echelons of our Military or Civilian Gov't could be nefarious folks wanting to do all sorts of rotten things here at home, I can't believe that the young men and women that I know, who are now serving in our Armed Forces would accept or follow orders of the type required to execute a military action of the type outlined in that fictional article. I know that I would not have, and Leavenworth be damned. Would you? Your family that have served? Your friends that you shoot with? I know quite well that our Military's job is to kill people and break things. I would like to address the examples you gave of the U.S. Military doing their job here in the U.S.
During my work at Holston, I had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in SW Virginia and West Virginia. I've been able to talk to folks who were there or their descendants. U.S. troops were never in Matewan, the gunfight was between miners and company hired thugs(detectives). At Blair Mountain not a single round of ammo was expended by the miners against U.S. troops nor did those troops fire on the miners. There is some speculation the USAAC bombers were used for observation, but there was no offensive use of U.S. forces. The miners dispersed when the troops arrived. I've seen the caches they made to hide their guns from the gubmint when they went home. The miners were dubbed the red neck army because of the bandanas the wore. Many folks think that was the birth of the term. Unfortunately Blair is no longer a national historic site and maintaining the site for future generations is going to be hard.
The Bonus Army was evicted from a federal reserve by the Army under lawful orders. 55 veterans were injured and 135 arrested. The only deaths that occurred were caused by D.C. police in a seperate incident.
Kent State was Ohio ANG under orders of the Gov. of Ohio Jim Rhodes. (Digression)
I grew up in Las Vegas, my Pop was Air Force stationed/retired at Nellis, I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Mary Ann Vecchio(the crying girl in the pictures from Kent State). She was a hostess/cashier at the casino coffee shop at Jerry's Nugget Casino in N. Las Vegas. A group of guys involved in the recycling and scrap industry, I was one of the group, met for lunch and playing Keno 3-4 times a week in the coffee shop. I learned of her background when she gained unwanted celebrity when the R/J printed the picture and a story about her on the 20th anniversary of the shootings. Her description of the events that culminated in the shootings was one of the most sobering, chilling accounts of chaos and loss that I have ever heard. A tragedy of huge proportions.(End)
The National Guardsmen were there to disperse rioters after 3 days of rioting, they burnt down the ROTC building, trashed the campus and rampaged thru town and did some looting. Tensions were high the NG had already dispersed rioters earlier in the day, without shots being fired, there was speculation that a sniper fired on the troops, and on and on. No one can deny that the Guard killed those kids, but I don't believe they were under orders to do so. 29 of the 77 troops claimed to have fired their weapons, read some of their stories, it is heart wrenching.
I don't believe any of your examples prove that U.S. troops when given orders to do so, will fire upon U.S. citizens.
Yet that is what you reply(I highlighted it in red) to Old Farmer is the reason for the training being undertaken. If the plan is to put down insurrection who's going to do it? I know that a couple of thousand JSOC operators (if they could find that many willing to do that voodoo that they do in the U.S.) are not capable of putting down a domestic insurrection.
Insurrection on the scale needed to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807, negating Posse Comitatus, would be quite large, like Blair Mtn. with 15-20,000 armed combatants. That scenario would require regular troops, mechanized infantry, armor, etc. Therefore the youngsters in my family will be a part of that op.
Again I repeat that story is fiction, if our Gov't is planning to put down an armed insurrection, guys swing on ropes and straffing highways ain't gonna do it.

Is this really just in case of terrorism? Or is it financial collapse? Far reaching natural disaster, or what? It seems they are serious about it.

You bet it is...and they believe WE are the terrorists.

I think it was extraordinarily stupid of the military to do this nonsense. If it is their intent to intimidate the population....you showed your hand, pretty stupid. If it was a miscalcuation, then I would like to bop some brass in the head and say "The American public ARE NOT puppets in your war games!" Lets say this was all innocent and meant nothing malicious towards American citizens. How is the populace supposed to know that these are our guys and not some mexican drug lord flexing his muscles, they are bleeding lucky someone did not return fire. Now that could have been disastrous for all involved.
As for the US military fighting against Americans. The military could fight one or two regions adequately. There are several instances in history where that has shown to be possible. However in say a gun registration/confiscation plan I think the country is simply too vast to be able to handle and the number of people trained to do battle (ex-military/special ops/ etc etc) too many to be simply put down. So could they take over Houston say and make it happen....sure....can they take over Houston, and San Antonio, and Dallas, and Austin, and New Orleans etc etc etc, not to mention all the country side in between....doubtful. Remember Iraq only had a small percentage of our population, many less cities, and it took the entire might of our military to get anywhere near conquering it. Same with Afghanistan. If the powers that be think that they can do this they are entirely foolish and have not studied their history adequately. Most of us in the flyoever states are not from the kowtow and bend over and take it groups in the world. We are from the Scotch Irish tradition of "devil take it all I am not going down like this!"

The air over Miami and Fort Lauderdale are both SUA and MOA (A-291 Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta) for military activity not hazardous to aircraft (No ACM). Homestead AFB (Reserve Airbase) hosts Air Force, Army Aviation and occasional Navy. Seeing military aircraft of all sorts, in various configurations and maneuvering is not unusual. It has been that way since WWII.

If the first option is implemented, it removes the solider from the equation of whether he would fire on his own countrymen.... it puts it squarely in the hands of a politician...

That's good, because you're not loved by the government. You're not still somewhat free because our rulers are men of principle but because of the calculus of the opportunists and their determination of what they can get away with.
