I can assure you that china is indeed as bad as things you may read about or in most cases worst. My wife's entire family is from china an the horror story's they tell me are mind blowing. As for the one baby law it's absolutely the real thing unless you have 10's of thousands to pay for the paper work to make the child legal. It's all about money, if you have it you can do whatever you want. If you are caught pregnant with out the correct approval papers they will take you away and take the baby out by any means necessary. I've been told stories about this happening to family members that have had it happen to them personally, imagine being strapped to a table and having your unborn child forced out of you. It sickens me to even think bout this being done but it is a reality for many who live in china.

Things may seem different when one visits China, like everything is fine and dandy but don't be fooled the government enslaves its people, steals there belonging, strips you of any property owned whenever they feel the need to use it, murders children and does little to nothing about crimes that are committed on its people.

For all the members of the family who have been able to get out of that country(never mind the outrageous amount of money you need to pay the government in order to leave) in recent years, I couldn't tell you how happy they are to now be citizens of this great nation of ours and most have said the would like nothing more then to never step foot in china again for the rest of there lives.

My understanding is that a lot of these abuses (can they really be called abuses if it is systemic, though -- more like business as usual) are based on how aggressive local and provincial governments are in enforcing national and party edicts.

In Xinjiang autonomous province officials have been murdered for attempting to take women in for forced abortion in which case Chinese security forces crack down on those provinces. If you get on the government's radar, they will make your life a living (or dying) Hades.

I tell you what, I would visit China before I would visit Russia. And yes, I would gladly visit China, I am not being sarcastic.

I don't know if it's because of our Central European heritage or not, but my children seem to be drawn to study in the former CCCP. My baby girl has spent the last 7 months in St. Petersburg and Moscow(My bride insists that I really don't need tranquilizers to survive being a Father in this situation)on an ETA scholarship and my youngest son studied International Business and Finance in Kiev.
The single biggest takeaway from this has been the understanding they've gained of other cultures and mores. They've not been brainwashed into puppetting the Party line, nor are they closet subversives waiting to attack our culture. Instead, they have gained insight into how other cultures look at themselves and how those cultures look at us! How do you enter into real meaningful negotiations on science, finance, military, trade, etc. if you can't communicate?
Our own frustration in educating/understanding the Antis, who share our culture, mores, and educational systems, should alert us to how important it is to have folks who can translate for us and them.

Never been to China. I have been to Italy/Sicily, Greece, Spain, Germany, England, and Iceland. In addition to those European countries, I've been to UAE (United Arab Emirates). Physically, I have been in several other countries, but either I wasn't able to leave the installation or I was only passing through. The countries I listed I have actually either lived there, or visited for weeks or months and have gotten to see the culture a bit. I found things in each of those countries that I liked, and things that I didn't like. For instance, there was good food in each of those places and food that was not so good (except Sicily, I never had a bad meal in Sicily). But I never felt like I had real freedom in those countries, any of them, though England was close (back in the mid-90s, before the expansion of the thug element that now seems to plague them) and Iceland was close, too. And in a nation like UAE, you had better be on your best behavior at all times, and not slip up even by accident...now, I'm not saying that I'm a person who would go around and break laws just for the fun of it, but I'm talking about watching over your shoulder at all times just in case. I have a feeling that China would be like that, as well. I'm glad I went and saw and experienced, but I'd much rather live right here in the State of Texas.
