Baylor's student senate approves CHL Carry on Campus
Baylor University's student senate approved a resolution to allow CHL holders to carry guns on campus. http://t.co/EjTknTMvLW" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Re: Baylor's student senate approves CHL Carry on Campus
Is this just a incorrect statement or did miss something. CHL car carry on campus has been legal for as long as I can remember. It is school policy that denies students right to have a gun in the car.
"Texas law allows college students with concealed carry licenses to have guns in a locked compartment in their car on campus."

It appears that this new proposal will allow students with CHL to carry guns to class, not just lock them in the car.howdy wrote: did miss something.
I am not a lawyer. This is NOT legal advice.!

It doesn't really say that and since they indicate and seem to think that the law only allows a CHL holder to only have it in their car that leaves skeptical that their intention is to allow students with a CHL to carry in classrooms. It probably is just a change in policy that says students must keep the guns in the car while on campus. It would be nice if this proposal was to allow CHLs to carry in classrooms and buildings. BTW, since they are talking about students, I guess that would not include a visiting parent, spouse, or sibling, if they are talking about allowing them inside buildings?RoyGBiv wrote:It appears that this new proposal will allow students with CHL to carry guns to class, not just lock them in the car.howdy wrote: did miss something.

School policy does not deny student CHL holders to have a firearm in their car.howdy wrote: ...

(emphasis mine)K. Use or possession of firearms, explosives, fireworks, missiles, or weapons on campus without the approval of the Vice President for Student Life. (Students should refer to the Texas Penal Code section 46.01 for definitions of weapons.) Baylor acknowledges that under Texas law, a student who holds a valid concealed handgun license may store a concealed firearm in a locked, privately owned or leased motor vehicle parked on a street or driveway or in a Baylor parking lot or parking garage.
Re: Baylor's student senate approves CHL Carry on Campus
At least Baylor policy clearly and specifically acknowledges the law with regards to CHL holders and car carry on campus. Unlike some who obfuscate in hope of confusing or intimidating legal licensed carry.

I think the statement is clear in the article, with no mention of cars:
"Baylor University's student senate has approved a resolution that would allow students and others who have concealed handgun permits to carry their guns on the Waco campus."

Since Baylor is a private university, they could authorize any CHL to carry on campus. Only the Regents can approve this of course.

Beat me to it. The student senate can pass all the resolutions they want, but they mean bupkis unless the actual authorities in charge of the university OK it.........and that would be the Board of Regents, plus the top administrators.oohrah wrote:Here is a more complete article

My statement did not specifically refer to Baylor (my unclear statement) I was referring to the "generic" school. University of Houston had a policy of no guns for students. If caught with a gun on campus, you were expelled forever.DocV wrote:School policy does not deny student CHL holders to have a firearm in their car.howdy wrote: ...

Such policies were overturned/prohibited by the Texas Legislature last year: http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/BillLook ... ill=SB1907" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;howdy wrote:My statement did not specifically refer to Baylor (my unclear statement) I was referring to the "generic" school. Section 411.2032(b) of the Texas Government Code reads:
(b) An institution of higher education or private or independent institution of higher education in this state may not adopt or enforce any rule, regulation, or other provision or take any other action, including posting notice under Section 30.06, Penal Code, prohibiting or placing restrictions on the storage or transportation of a firearm or ammunition in a locked, privately owned or leased motor vehicle by a person, including a student enrolled at that institution, who holds a license to carry a concealed handgun under this subchapter and lawfully possesses the firearm or ammunition:
(1) on a street or driveway located on the campus of the institution; or
(2) in a parking lot, parking garage, or other parking area located on the campus of the institution.

Lord-Luv-A-Duck
Laws created supposedly for public safety that require firearms be left un attended in a public place are both silly and counter productive.

If you read it that paragraph is restating state law.
