Ivy League girl may drop out over school’s anti-gun policy

Post by Superman »

She has a stalker (since high school apparently) and the school won't let her carry a gun for protection. She has a legit concern...but I don't see the school making an exception (unfortunately).
Woolrich and her family called the police, and Bennett was arrested. A search of his car uncovered a slip noose, a knife, gloves and other items.

Any good Ivy Leaguer should know that the it is more politically correct to be raped and left dead in an alley than to defend yourself and shoot the rapist.

Does she not have brothers or friends who could dissuade this monster from further depredations?

As a father and grandfather I wouldn't stand for this.

Unfortunately, crazy is very difficult to reason with within the boundaries of the right side of the law.

There's all anyone needs to know about what this school thinks of its students. I wonder if one of those administrators up in their ivory tower would also be denied their request to carry a gun if they had a similar problem.

Emphasis on "feel" was my doing.

Having had a stalker in the past, the "school's rules" would have been utterly irrelevant to me.

When going to night school at a fine urban university in the state, I could guesstimate maybe a third of the people carried including professors. It was a pretty open thing. Rules are irrelevant if you're being attacked in the parking lot.

Note: I am not advocating doing anything illegal in any way. I'm just reporting on what the real world conditions were. Administrators can babble and think what they want, but people will do what they want to do.

Her dad needs to buy a handgun and give it to her. She needs to use discretion and carry it on her person.

Sad to think that Rick Perry and the Texas legislature support Dartmouth's position. Hopefully she will transfer somewhere the politicians truly care about campus safety.

Are there such colleges located in the U.S.?

(I really hope the answer is yes, if so, let them be named)

All public colleges in Utah and Colorado are required by state law to allow licensed concealed carry on campus (there is a concerted effort to get it banned in Colorado, but those efforts have, thus far, fallen short). Idaho recently legalized it for holders of the state's new enhanced license (public colleges cannot prohibit it), and Mississippi allows it for holders of a Mississippi license with an "enhanced" endorsement (again, public colleges cannot prohibit it). There are other states where it is allowed to varying degrees (e.g., on campuses but not in buildings, as is the case in Texas) and where it is allowed by state law but not school policy (e.g., Oregon), but Colorado, Idaho, Mississippi, and Utah are the only states where concealed carry is actually allowed in most buildings on all public campuses, by both state law and school policy. It should be noted that these four states do have some restrictions. For example, the Idaho law prohibits concealed carry in venues seating more than 1,000 people and in dormitories, and some Mississippi and Colorado campuses have policies against carrying in certain locations such as auditoriums and student housing.

Bladed,

That's great information.

O.K. parents of college age students, Bladed has helped you to know where to possibly send them...

:iagree: IMO, Dartmouth isn't that great anyway. No school is worth dying over.

She isn't old enough to get a permit in most states anyway, so the school's policy isn't the only thing keeping her from legally carrying.
