Mr. Goss, my junior high principal always (strongly) encouraged us to put on the gloves when we had altercations. I learned later that he would give heavier gloves to the bigger kid to even things up. I gain a lot of confidence and self respect from him. I found that I love boxing and was fearless. (I also got cocky)

He would often stand next to our lunch table and goad us "toughies", he would say something like, Mr. Beaux, you think youre pretty tough dont you? I would say, nope, I know Im tough. He would then say, think youre tough enough to whip Bobby? I would say, heck yeah....and it was on!

Some of us had math and some of us had english class after lunch. We learned that if we started challenging each other, we would be in the gym boxing instead of being in one of these hated classes!

As an adult I ran into Mr. Goss (then retired) at the American Legion Hall. I bought him a beer and told him how much I appreciated who he was and what he had taught me. He got tears in his eyes and grabbed me behind the neck (like he always did) and proclaimed to all...yeah, Mr. Beaux came to me as a bull in a china closet and when I finished with him he was meek as a little lamb! For years my friends called me Jimmy Baa Baa.
