I heard this story on the news yesterday and was disturbed. I didn't see it on the forum already. From the news story I heard, it sounds like we were paying locals for security and even after Benghazi, we still don't have it tight enough. Continued attacks and now we lost what sounds like some high tech weaponry that we didn't want in the BG's hands.
From the description of it, it didn't sound extremely sensitive but then again, I'm no expert. There was concern expressed that the night vision stuff taken was a real game changer for us.

Re: High Tech Weapons Stolen in Libya
You have to fill out an ITAR statement/request to ship NV equipment outside of the U.S. for gen 2, 3 and 4. There's a reason for that.
I would suspect the SF guys had gen 4 equipment. Your talking daylight, facial recognition beyond 100 meters, type equipment. And while it's not "delicate" by any means, it still needs to be maintained, who is going to provide it? You need to train with it to be effective, who is going to provide that?
I don't want to minimize the impact of these thefts, but long term? I would compare it to the Plains Tribes warriors riding around with "Golden Boys" in obsolete calibers unable to find ammunition for them. Status symbol only.

Foreign security is part of the reason behind the Camp Bastin attack in Afghanistan. Destroyed several harrier jets. I think the guards were sleeping and everyone knew it but wouldn't fix it.
Re: High Tech Weapons Stolen in Libya
It sounds like there was more to the story and it's getting worse:
"Fox News has learned, with raiders swiping hundreds of weapons"....."According to State Department and military sources, dozens of highly armored vehicles called GMV's, provided by the United States, are now missing. The vehicles feature GPS navigation as well as various sets of weapon mounts and can be outfitted with smoke-grenade launchers."
You would think that with all the publicity on Benghazi, security would not be so poor in Libya still.

In military parlance, "GMV" means "Government Motor Vehicle". If the army owned a Vespa, it would be a "GMV".
Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence. - John Adams

From the aritcle, it said they were armored vehichles with GPS and gun mounts. That would be a cool Vespa.Pawpaw wrote:In military parlance, "GMV" means "Government Motor Vehicle". If the army owned a Vespa, it would be a "GMV".
