Their reason for asking was a scare tactic about the UN "arms treaty", saying that if the senate passed it and then if the president signed it, that it would become law.

a) You cannot make something law inside this country, ESPECIALLY ONE THAT INFRINGES THE CONSTITUTION, without both houses of congress voting on it.
b) You will never remove the weapons or ammo manufacturing from this country with a foreign treaty
c) How difficult would it be to make your own firearms if they did somehow stop the manufacturing of them? There are CNC programs available out there for downloading, and all you have to do is press "go"

This severely bothered me. I completely trounced their argument, and the person who called me had to hang up. I thought the NRA would be better than this fear mongering, and instead tout how they were going to defeat such a thing, instead of trying to bolster more money.

I agree thats an interesting argument to make. Their joining in a lawsuite WITH the ACLU against the NSA (just came over the news wires) is something I'd go for more.

I opted out of pretty much everything when I joined NRA.
Took a few months for the mail and calls to stop coming, but I only get maybe 1-2 calls a year now.

For an organization that does so much good, I'm going to give them some latitude to jump a few sharks.
But I'd be as equally upset as the OP if it was my time they were wasting to promote that junk to raise funds.

If that's the number they have on file for you as a contact number, then that is the one they will call. Call the NRA and have your account put on a no solicitation list. I don't get anything from them.

What was the number that called? I read a couple of reports that there are “phishing” phone calls from people saying they are from the NRA. They are trying to get a credit card number and other info.

I use my home number for anything that gets registered, bought, etc and only give out my cell to people I know. I don't answer my home phone. Makes it easy.

On another note regarding NRA...I started getting these somewhat aggressive letters stating I owed them money for a DVD. I called them and they stated that they sent out Defensive Pistol dvd's a few months back and if I kept it, I owed them money. They said I never sent it back, so I owed the 20 bucks or whatever it was. I told them I did recall seeing some dvd, but like most crap in the mail, I threw it away. The nice lady on the phone then stated, "so you did keep it..." I hung up and they never called back or mailed any more letters.

The NRA does a lot of great things, but they can be somewhat annoying in how they try to collect money for the cause.

I got the same call on my way home from work (on my cell). Lady said she was a paid caller on behalf of the NRA...

I didn't let her finish. Like some, I'm willing to give them some lattitude since they're the NRA. Doesn't mean I have to listen to their pitch...

My call came from 877 318 1086 as well. If it's a phishing scam, they must have somehow acquired the NRA call list.

Another site says, caller id displays National Recovery Association when called by this number.

I think you had better read the Constitution. Article 2, Section 2, Clause 2 reads "He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur;"

So, when it comes to treaties, the House is not involved at all. All it takes is for the Senate to approve the treaty by a two thirds majority, and the President to sign the treaty, and it becomes binding on the US. As to whether or not a treaty can abrogate the Constitution, it cannot, but that wouldn't stop our politicians from approving it anyway or the Executive branch from enforcing its provisions, Constitution notwithstanding.

In Article 6, Clause 2, those treaties become the supreme law of the land. "This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding."
