Tierney Unveils Bill Calling for Smart Guns

#1

Post by JJVP »

SALEM — In the most recent James Bond thriller “Skyfall,” 007 packs a pistol coded to his palm print that fires only when he holds it — a high-tech feature that saves his life when the gun falls into the wrong hands.

Yesterday, Congressman John Tierney introduced a bill that could make that technology a common feature of handguns in the next two years.

They have been trying this for years. Biometric pistol grips would be a great idea so that only those porgrammed in could fire it. It would definately make it more safe, but it shouldn't be a mandatory thing.

As for actually 'smart' guns, I would say all of mine are pretty smart; they haven't ever shot the wrong person!

Anyone want to bet that a "smart gun" would have a way for the government to deactivate it with a signal?

I'll believe in smart guns when police carry them by choice.

Nobody is asking the most important question. Do smart guns exist? As far as I can tell they do not.

Although they may in the future. = http://www.smartplanet.com/blog/bulleti ... egin/18647" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My guns are smarter than my kids were when they were young. At least my guns would do what they were instructed to do when they were supposed to do it. Kids never did :evil2:

Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. Personally, anything electronic ought to be no more than an accessory to the basic weapon. Guns are mechanically fairly simple, and they ought to remain that way if we're going to have confidence that they won't malfunction when we need them most. Electronics can be disabled by too many things, even things that we may not be instantly aware are happening.....EMP, for instance.

They could make them like the "shake it" flashlights.

Just shake your gun up and down for two minutes prior to attempting to operate. :biggrinjester:

But wait...I saw those in a movie somewhere and they worked perfectly... :biggrinjester:

Seriously, I'll bet that Tierney thinks that since they have had them in movies for years, they must be commercially available at a cheap price. :banghead:
