"House Republicans are not ruling out passing gun legislation this year, according to a key GOP lawmaker.
The collapse of gun control in the Senate last month led many on and off Capitol Hill to believe the issue would not be revived in this Congress.

"Goodlatte, serving his first year as the head of the Judiciary panel, pointed out that the National Instant Criminal Background Check System needs to be reauthorized before year's end. The reauthorization could be the vehicle through which the GOP tackles the highly charged issue. Goodlatte, who has an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association (NRA), said earlier this year he wants to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill."
.... That looks like the key motivation to proactively move forward asap to take the wind out of the sails of the anti-gun movement. If they waited until the last minute reauthorization of the NICS, wouldn't it be more likely that the anti forces would pull some last minute stunt to add a ton of "we have to pass to see what's in it" type amendments to the reauthorization bill? I'm going to reserve the right to revise my opinion at a later date, but for the moment will give them the benefit of the doubt on being "constructive" on this one.

They need to start with enforcing the current laws before creating new laws that they won't enforce. Once that's tightened up, then they can add provisions to keep people who have pleased not guilty by reason of insanity or who have been judged incompetent to stand trial from buying guns - and enforce it. I'd like to see the dismantling of so-called gun-free zones after that, but I don't believe that will ever get much traction.

During an interview with NPR, Holder reiterated his desire for gun control by focusing on impeding access and drying up supply, bold my emphasis
