State Senator Kirk Watson opposes campus carry...
I recently wrote to Senator Watson regarding gun rights issues letting him know how one of his constituents felt. I received a letter back today explaining his general support of gun rights but then stating that he is against campus carry after speaking with university presidents, chancellors, and student government associations.
I must say I am disappointed to hear it. He may find it hard to garner my vote next election.

So, he didn't speak to any students. What sort of answer did he think he was going to get?

I just sent the following to Senator Watson.
Senator Watson,
Recently it came to my attention that you are opposed to campus carry after having spoken with university presidents, chancellors and student government associations.
Perhaps my experience as a staff member at a state university might inform your view in a way that you haven't yet been exposed to. I am a 65 year old Navy veteran and a longtime University employee. I hold a CHL and carry a gun with me every day. I pray that I never have to use it to shoot another human being, but I do not wish to be helpless in the face of violence.
Unfortunately, although the state trusts me to carry a gun almost everywhere I go, one place I am not allowed to carry is in my workplace. For some reason the legislature saw fit to make a perfectly arbitrary decision to deny me the right of self defense while working.
Data collected since the adoption of the CHL laws show that CHL holders are 15 times less likely to commit a crime than the average Texas citizen. We are even less likely to commit a crime than members of law enforcement. Yet for some reason, when we cross the threshold of a building at a university, we are not to be trusted.
I know the fear mongers talk about immature students brandishing weapons at the first sign of conflict, but the fact is most undergraduates aren't even eligible to carry weapons at all, much less carry them to school. The ones who do anyway are lawbreakers and would be unaffected by any change to the law.
Since you've taken the time to poll the powers that be, I would respectfully request that you do the same with university employees who hold CHL licenses before you foreclose the possibility of voting for the right to carry on campus.
Thank you for your time,

I would really hope that your opposition wouldn't be based on a sole negative vote on a single issue. I agree with it being an indicator that he deserves more scrutiny, but it would not be an automatic disqualifier for me unless it was in concert with other action or inaction on his part.

Given the lack of participation (apathy if you will) on a recent OC/Campus Carry poll on this forum, I don't think the Senator has much to worry about.

I don't think we've seen much about campus carry because it has been around before, it is early in the process, and there are big federal issues in the spotlight. I emailed my elected officials shortly after it was introduced. I'm a middle-aged grad student, attending classes on Saturdays, in a building full of only grad students. Nothing bad will happen to me while I'm disarmed though. It's in Killeen and nothing bad ever happens in Killeen.jmra wrote:Given the lack of participation (apathy if you will) on a recent OC/Campus Carry poll on this forum, I don't think the Senator has much to worry about.

Since schools are ran by liberals, I would expect that. Sad. I don't see it passing.

The Texas House of Representatives is where this stalled the last two sessions. I just reminded my rep to keep this bill moving by signing as a co-author. I encourage all of you to either ask yours to do the same, or to thank them for already doing so.
If we don't keep our thumbs on them they will wiggle out again.
Enjoy!

I also sent an email to my Rep.
I got a reply stating he supports the bill.
